Who could have predicted that Bush -- the massively successful but critically detested '90s alt-metal outfit that helped usher in the radio-ready "modern rock" of the post-grunge era -- would prove such a principal influence on the scores of bands that have since flooded the airwaves?

Breaking Benjamin singer-guitarist Ben Burnley may have chosen to honor Trent Reznor by performing a faithful reading of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" during his band's co-headlining set with Three Days Grace at the Orpheum on Sunday. But while he may share the same home state as NIN's famously tortured frontman, Burnley and his Pennsylvania-bred cohorts had more in common with Bush singer Gavin Rossdale's preening angst and pearly white polish, as well as that band's knack for shrewdly planting a bright pop hook in the midst of all the cartoon darkness.

Big, turgid guitar riffs pummeled and powered a handful of tunes from Breaking Benjamin's new "Phobia" CD -- "Had Enough," "Evil Angel," and "Dance With the Devil" among them (the last, a duet with Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier, triggered an ocean of cellphones taking aim to capture the moment for posterity). Ultimately, though, as tough-minded as the songs strived to be, they sounded about as dangerous as a video game or toothpaste commercial. But in Burnley and his ever-flashing smile, at least they had an effective pitchman.

The half-hour wait between the bands' 60-minute sets did little to quash the giddy momentum among the all-ages crowd. When it was Three Days Grace's turn, Burnley returned the guest-duet favor by joining the group on a bruisingly melodramatic "Take Me Under," from the Canadian alt-metal crew's self-titled 2003 debut.

Like its tourmates, Three Days Grace worked from the boilerplate of '90s modern rock, but applied darker nu-metal tones favored by contemporaries like Hinder and Godsmack. Gontier seemed at times to battle a bout of hoarseness as his band churned through hammer-headed, heavy-handed odes to family dysfunction ("Home"), adolescent estrangement ("Never Too Late"), and feeling angry ("Riot"). When Gontier sat down on a stool with an acoustic guitar, unplugged-style, for a cover of the Ben Harper ballad "Another Lonely Day," it was further proof that the spirit of the '90s was alive.

Openers Red, a capable if indistinct Christian metal band from Tennessee, serviceably set the evening's tone of borrowed bombast and bluster.
