Переведите! Three Days Grace rocks on, calmer
The high: driving on the 401 in Toronto, when he heard his best friend's voice screaming its way through the group's first single on a Canadian radio station.
"I had to pull over," said Brad Walst, bassist for Three Days Grace. "I was so overwhelmed. That was the first time I realized this could be something that would turn out to be really great."
The low: hearing the bad news, learning his best friend was checking into rehab to deal with his addiction to OxyContin.
"I think we all knew it was coming," Walst said. "We all knew his problem on the road. It was scary. It's hard to see your best friend go through something like that."
His demons behind him for the moment, Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier has shackled his pain and dumped it into the group's new album. "Pain" and "Never Too Late" are two of the autobiographical offerings.
"This world will never be what I expected," Gontier sings on "Never Too Late." "And if I don't belong ..."
His voice trails off, picking back up when he remembers "it's not too late; it's never too late."
The sound is not a departure from the group's self-titled 2003 release, but the theme is. Four years ago, when Walst was driving in Toronto, the title of the song that inspired him to pull to the shoulder was "(I Hate) Everything About You."
Anger courses through both records. On "One-X," the band's current album, the anger appears to be directed inward. According to Walst, as the group's last tour stretched into a second year, "we really broke down as a band."
"We were just overwhelmed by success," Walst said. "Some people partied a little harder than others. It became almost like a job when you wake up in the morning."
For this album, they left Toronto, holing up in the suburbs, where they talked through their issues. Whatever rifts had developed, whatever egos had been bruised, when they walked out the door, every issue had been resolved.
The guys are excited about playing New Jersey with Nickelback, if only because there's a chance they will run into their friend on the Devils – defenseman Brad Lukowich.
"He's just a big fan," Walst said. "We always stop by his house in Dallas and party. Even if he's not there, [he says,] 'Here's where the key is.' We're good buddies."
The summer after Lukowich won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, the band drove from San Jose, Calif., to Lukowich's home in Cranbrook, British Columbia, for a chance to see the cup.
"It was about 1 o'clock [in the morning]," Lukowich said. "We're sitting at a pub in Cranbrook, and all I see is this guy walk in with a 3-foot Mohawk. They had been on the road for a while, and they looked terrible. They all walked in, and I'm like, 'You guys rock.' They came in, grabbed the cup, lifted it up, and then they came on and started playing."
That was a high; Gontier's struggles with OxyContin, a low. On this tour, they're looking for the middle ground, a place where they can present their anger without worrying about it consuming them.

"We chose Columbus as the location for this national event because it's centrally located. And right there, in the heart of America, is where you'll find the epicenter of pure, no-strings-attached rock n' roll."

Life on the road can be hazardous for young musicians getting their first taste of money and fame. The history of music is littered with stories of lives ruined by the excesses of success.
A two-year tour begun after the release of its self-titled debut album in 2003 took its toll on Three Days Grace, but instead of burning out, the group survived and used its experiences as the foundation for its second disc, One-X.
"Basically, our first tour was a pretty long one — it was like two-years' long — and some of us got in a little bit of trouble," bassist Brad Walst said in a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Spokane, Wash. "It's a long road and some of us partied a little too hard."
The grind was enough to lead Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier to seek out a rehab clinic. While getting clean, Gontier did what many a musician has done and turned his struggle into art.
"He took a lot of time off to get better . . . rehab and such," Walst recalled. "Through that, he basically just wrote down everything he was going through and, as a result, a lot of that became the lyrics on One-X.
"It was a tough time, but I think we're in a better spot than we ever were. We're a much tighter unit than we were before."
Three Days Grace is back on the road for an extended tour with Nickelback and Breaking Benjamin — it comes to the Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport Wednesday night — and, this time out, the group is hoping for a smoother ride.
"We're really just trying to find other ways to enjoy the road," Walst said. "You can get caught up in a lot of different stuff out here."
In writing the songs for One-X, the band — which also includes guitarist Barry Stock and drummer Neil Sanderson — decided to uproot from its Toronto base and retreat to a cottage in northern Ontario. "Toronto, where we live, is a big city with like 3 million people, and we have friends and family and it was just very distracting for us," Walst said. "We got a space in downtown Toronto and tried writing and it wasn't flowing for some reason so we decided to pack up and go up north and escape it all.
"That alleviated a lot of the pressures that you get and we turned the cell phones off and surrounded ourselves with nothing. That's where the record really unfolded for us."
Walst said playing the songs from One-X in concert can be kind of cathartic, especially since many of the songs deal with the trials and tribulations that came from the last tour.
"We love playing live and I think it's a release for us playing this stuff, even the older songs," Walst said. "It's like therapy when you get up there. Talking about it and singing about it has really helped us."
On this tour, Gontier has made it a point to visit several rehab centers, shelters and detention centers and has, on occasion, brought along the band.
"Adam usually goes alone, because it's usually a smaller thing, but as a full band we've done three of them," Walst said. "The experience that you come out of there with is amazing. There's a different type of energy. People there can really relate, even if they're young or old or from any race."
Actually, a lot of rock fans are embracing the new record, which has spawned the hit single "Animal I Have Become," Gontier's plea for help. (Sample lyric: "Somebody get me through this nightmare/I can't control myself")
"People are definitely relating to the album," Walst said. "You can see that. We just did a headlining tour with Buckcherry for about four weeks and that was the first time we really got to do a lot of the new stuff. "It was pretty cool because you could see people singing every word and girls in the front crying their eyes out. It's a weird feeling to see that.
"People are really relating to it, maybe not on the same level that we wrote it on, but they're applying it to their everyday life, so that's pretty cool."
"Animal I Have Become" brought Three Days Grace the rock single of the year honor at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards.
"That was pretty exciting," Walst said. "That was our first real award for anything, so that was pretty surreal. You don't realize it until you get up on stage and you're like, 'Wow.' That was really rewarding."
So now Three Days Grace is back on the road with fellow Canadian rock band Nickelback, an arrangement that has worked out well for the band in the past.
"They're always great," Walst said. "I think we've done over 100 shows with Nickelback in the past, so it's very familiar. They try to keep a lot of the same crew and it's like a big family. It's like a reunion for us. We get to see all of these people we haven't seen in a while."
And, Walst added, it doesn't hurt being on the same bill with Nickelback, which has a huge fan base.
"It's nice to come from the club environment where you're playing for 1,000 to 2,000 people and then to get to stadiums and have times-20 the exposure," He said. "That's pretty awesome."
Walst expects Three Days Grace to be on the road until 2008, with the only break scheduled for July, when Sanderson's wife is expected to give birth.
"That seems like the only way we get time off now is either you get married or have kids," Walst said with a laugh.
Three Days Grace focusing on headlining own tour next
Three Days Grace is currently opening for Nickelback, but will start its own headlining run once the current dates are finished. Although supporting a superstar act in large stadiums has its advantages, Three Days Grace drummer Neil Sanderson told us that the band really wants to focus on its own shows: "You know, we did a cross-Canada Three Days Grace headliner tour and we were able to headline hockey arenas, you know, right across the board and sell them out, you know. So our focus is really to headline and we're gonna be doing the never-ending Three Days Grace headlining tour until we can't possibly, you know, go any longer on this record. And that's gonna be a while because we're pretty heavy into it right now."
Three Days Grace will take Breaking Benjamin along on its headlining dates, which start on April 18th in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Canadian act will also play a special concert for U.S. troops in Hawaii on June 29th.
Three Days Grace is touring in support of its second album, One-X, which came out last June.
A two-week online auction started by Three Days Grace drummer Neil Sanderson and his wife Janin began yesterday (Tuesday, March 6th). The auction, which is offering autographed items from sports and music stars, will benefit Operation Herbie, which funds a program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada for children from Third World countries.
