LiveDaily Interview: Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace

After struggling for years with addiction, Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier is thankful for the help he received from Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Queen Street facility. He's so grateful that, during his North American tour, he is bypassing the usual afternoon acoustic radio performances to play for rehab and mental-health facilities, as well as homes for troubled children.

"The tours are normally set up where you go to radio stations during the day; you do the typical kind of acoustic thing," Gontier told LiveDaily last month, shortly after his group won a Billboard award for the single "Animal I Have Become." "This was a way for me to sort of give back to that community that turned my life around."

"It was just something that I thought I'd like to do, so I set it up. The biggest thing about it is I want to let kids know and people know that they can talk about it.'"

Gontier--who is joined in the band by drummer/vocalist Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst and guitarist Barry Stock--talked to LiveDaily about his sobriety, the songwriting process for Three Days Grace's latest album, "One-X," and hanging out on MySpace.

LiveDaily: Depression, addiction, those are both "taboo" subjects to talk about. I think that's honorable that you're publicly discussing your problems.

Adam Gontier: That's the biggest thing. People don't want to talk about it, and you have to--especially if you're going through it. You really have to get it out, you know.

How long ago were you hospitalized?

A year and eight months ago.

How are you doing?

I'm doing well. I've been clean since then. I haven't touched anything. I've been doing really well.

I would say that your addiction and subsequent recovery is definitely reflected in the album.

Oh yeah, the lyrics were all sort of written while I was going through that period. It's a really personal record. It's got a lot of my, sort of, journal entries from the last couple years.

The songs "Get Out Alive" and "Time of Dying" are intensely personal..

Yep. Yep for sure. There's a lot of them. "Never Too Late" is another one that hits home as well. It's cool to be able to get up on stage every night and play the songs. It's a way to get things off my chest. It's cool because people relate to it sort of on their own level.

Have you had a lot of fans share their stories with you?

Yeah, quite a few. I spend a lot of time on the Internet, on MySpace, talking to fans and trying to stay connected to them. It's pretty amazing.

Describe the songwriting process for Three Days Grace.

It's kind of all over the place. There's not one specific style that we use. We tend to sit together with guitars and a hand drum and whoever has an idea throws an idea out there, whether it's musically or melody or something like that. Generally, the lyrics are written separate from the music. After music's been written or before it doesn't really matter. We sit together and come up with the music and lyrics. I write lyrics sometimes during the day, on the bus whenever. It's all over the place.

What was it like to work with producer Howard Benson?

He's a really great producer He's got great ears. He's done a few really good records and he really focuses on the vocals and the melodies and the harmonies. It was really great to work with a producer that was really vocal-centric.

What was the most important thing you think you learned from him?

I think the biggest thing I learned from working with him is there's so much you can do with your voice and there's so many different weird harmonies. There's things out there that a lot of singers and bands don't use. He introduced me to different melodies and harmonies and different ways of doing things.

You're touring with Nickelback and Breaking Benjamin soon. What will you do when the tour ends?

Probably still be on tour. I don't know exactly where we're going to be. Australia, maybe overseas. It all depends really. I'm sure we'll be on the road somewhere.

Мне так вдвойне Трудней потому-что я учусь в школе с детьми у которых еще Детсво в Одном месте играет!!

Мне тож с вами круто общаться! Плохо, что мы разбросаны по всей стране.Когда говоришь людям, что я общаюсь на форуме, сперва спрашивают, что такое форум, а потом смотрят на тебя так, словно тебе не хватает общения. Во дибилы!

Three Days Grace is on tour with a new album and a new outlook

“Your music saved my life.”

That’s what a fan told Brad Walst of Three Days Grace at a recent merchandise signing. The teenager’s parents had recently divorced, and emotionally, he had been through a lot.

“I got goose bumps,” Walst said. “So many artists find it hard to find people who relate to their art. We are lucky to have people who respond to what we’re doing.”

What Walst and bandmates Adam Gontier, Neil Sanderson and Barry Stock are doing now is touring with their second album, the platinum-selling “One-X.” Three Days Grace performs at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. Also on the bill are Breaking Benjamin, Seether and Skillet.

Three Days Grace’s brand of alt-metal rock has tapped into the zeitgeist, garnering hundreds of thousands of fans. So how did a group from rural Canada — a town with a population of 1,500 — become the voice of urban angst?

“When you’re on the road,” Walst explained, “you meet a lot of people. They show you around the city, and act like they’re your best friend — but you don’t really know them.”

Despite the downsides of touring, Walst believes he’s got “the best job in the world.”

“We just love playing every night. We want to do this forever,” the bass player and vocalist said in a phone interview from Philadelphia. “I’ve seen other bands, success goes to their heads [and] then they don’t last. We don’t ever want to be like that. We don’t ever want to stop making music.”

Walst, 30, attributes this level-headed attitude toward his career in part to growing up with two of his band mates in Norwood, Ontario.

“At heart, we’re small-town guys,” he said. “We don’t take anything we have for granted.”

In the small town about 100 miles northeast of Toronto, the trio always knew they were different.

“I think we all felt somewhat set apart,” said Walst, who recently moved back to Norwood with his wife and baby son. “We weren’t outcasts, we weren’t bad kids, but we didn’t really fit in. We were isolated from the norm.”

That sense of isolation translates into music that, ironically, makes Three Days Grace’s fans feel less alone.

Although the rise of Three Days Grace to rock stardom has been swift — their self-titled debut reached the Top 10 in 2003, and they have had five No. 1 singles. But Walst doesn’t feel like success came suddenly.

“We’ve paid our dues. We’ve played a lot, different venues all over the place. We’ve played weddings, we’ve opened for abstract art films, and we’ve played on a hay wagon in a field. We always had the mentality that we would play anywhere, take any job.”

That mentality didn’t change when Three Days Grace hit the charts. The success of the first record “was like winning the lottery,” Walst said. “But we took it kind of excessive. We did two and a half years’ straight touring.”

The pressures of that tour brought on lead singer Gontier’s addiction to painkillers, which he overcame in rehab in 2005.

“Adam came out [of rehab] with a whole notebook of songs and poems. So lyrically, he contributed the most [to ‘One-X’],” Walst said. “Meanwhile, the rest of us were jamming every day. So we contributed more to the music.”

Three Days Grace have been on the road with the new album on and off since April 2006. The rockers have been all over the United States and Canada. Their shows don’t change when they go from their homeland to the States, but the audiences do.

“In Canada, there’s less moshing,” Walst mused, “Americans tend to be more aggressive — but that’s cool. We use our music as an outlet to work out our feelings. They use the mosh pit.”

Are the constant travel and close quarters hard on his friendships with Gontier, Sanderson and Stock?

“During the first tour we became non-communicative,” Walst recalled. “We just didn’t talk. It was like it was becoming a job — it was becoming mundane. We learned from that to never stop communicating.

“We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, and they have brought us closer. We’ve known each other since we were 15. Now, we’re like brothers.”

And the job? Walst laughed.

“This is less a job than — I don’t know what to call it — a passion.”

Three Days Grace makes it real

GRAND RAPIDS -- Even with rock music's many branches making the genre hard to define these days, Three Days Grace knows it's bringing a seldom-played form to a music stage near you: Real rock.

"We just try to show everybody that it's still all right to be a real band -- and just be real instead of trying to go up on stage and make something that's larger than life, using tracks and that kind of (thing)," said 28-year-old Neil Sanderson, drummer for the Canadian band.

"We're just not into that. But I think real rock fans can see through that stuff just like I can."

Sanderson, lead vocalist/guitarist Adam Gontier, lead guitarist Barry Stock and bassist/vocalist Brad Walst have been creating contemplative but catchy chart-topping rock since their 2003 self-titled debut album.

The record produced the dissonant "Just Like You" and no-holds-barred "I Hate Everything About You."

Their sophomore effort, 2006's "One-X," has manufactured a string of hits: "Pain," rock anthem "Never Too Late" and the incendiary "Animal I Have Become."

Change is hard

Despite two dark albums, Sanderson said, they're really not dark guys. It's just that the subject matter lends itself to that angst.

"We write about making change in your life. So part of making change generally starts with the negative," he said. "We write about a sense of urgency on taking action. So some people interpret that as negative meandering, but I think it's more just like identifying the bad and just doing something about it."

Hence, their name: Three days grace given to people to turn things around.

Lead singer Gontier had to turn things around with his prescription pain killer addiction a couple of years ago. He checked himself into rehab. Now, the band's doing well and working just as hard as ever, Sanderson said.

Having just flown in to Bloomington, Ill., after a day's vacation in Toronto to spend time playing with his daughter and cutting the grass, Sanderson spoke about how hard the band has worked to be touring for such large crowds, including 21,000 recently in St. Louis.

"It's awesome to be able to go up there and do this on this level.

Also part of the whole rock experience is songwriting, which they do collaboratively and acoustically.

"If you can break a song down to a couple of guitars, a hand drum and a vocal or two, and it's good, then whatever you add on to it's just gonna make it better," Sanderson said.

With as much attention as they pay to producing music, they made sure to put together a tour with bands they respect. Besides being good friends, Breaking Benjamin, Seether and Skillet play real rock, he said.

No tracks, no loops.

Making real music

"We're kind of about the real deal, as far as being able to go up on stage and own the stage. We like bands that can actually play their instruments and not just play to a bunch of tracks. And those bands are ... the real deal."

That includes The Rolling Stones, of course, for whom Three Days Grace opened two shows last October for 45,000 each night.

"They're really down-to-earth guys. If those kind of guys can be down-to-earth, all the more reason to reiterate the fact that people shouldn't have a lot of time for (big egos) in the industry."

Aware of the industry's many veneers and the isolation and impersonal aspects of touring, the band is a little more relaxed these days.

Sanderson finds relaxation and renewal by enjoying the moments on stage when professionalism collides with being "chill enough that you can kind of take in your surroundings and enjoy the moment and not just be a drum geek all the time," he said, laughing.

Да!Когда у меня возникает какая-нибудь сложная ситуация, я включаю грэев и как то намного легче становится. И проблемы
