LiveDaily Interview: Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace

After struggling for years with addiction, Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier is thankful for the help he received from Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Queen Street facility. He's so grateful that, during his North American tour, he is bypassing the usual afternoon acoustic radio performances to play for rehab and mental-health facilities, as well as homes for troubled children.

"The tours are normally set up where you go to radio stations during the day; you do the typical kind of acoustic thing," Gontier told LiveDaily last month, shortly after his group won a Billboard award for the single "Animal I Have Become." "This was a way for me to sort of give back to that community that turned my life around."

"It was just something that I thought I'd like to do, so I set it up. The biggest thing about it is I want to let kids know and people know that they can talk about it.'"

Gontier--who is joined in the band by drummer/vocalist Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst and guitarist Barry Stock--talked to LiveDaily about his sobriety, the songwriting process for Three Days Grace's latest album, "One-X," and hanging out on MySpace.

LiveDaily: Depression, addiction, those are both "taboo" subjects to talk about. I think that's honorable that you're publicly discussing your problems.

Adam Gontier: That's the biggest thing. People don't want to talk about it, and you have to--especially if you're going through it. You really have to get it out, you know.

How long ago were you hospitalized?

A year and eight months ago.

How are you doing?

I'm doing well. I've been clean since then. I haven't touched anything. I've been doing really well.

I would say that your addiction and subsequent recovery is definitely reflected in the album.

Oh yeah, the lyrics were all sort of written while I was going through that period. It's a really personal record. It's got a lot of my, sort of, journal entries from the last couple years.

The songs "Get Out Alive" and "Time of Dying" are intensely personal..

Yep. Yep for sure. There's a lot of them. "Never Too Late" is another one that hits home as well. It's cool to be able to get up on stage every night and play the songs. It's a way to get things off my chest. It's cool because people relate to it sort of on their own level.

Have you had a lot of fans share their stories with you?

Yeah, quite a few. I spend a lot of time on the Internet, on MySpace, talking to fans and trying to stay connected to them. It's pretty amazing.

Describe the songwriting process for Three Days Grace.

It's kind of all over the place. There's not one specific style that we use. We tend to sit together with guitars and a hand drum and whoever has an idea throws an idea out there, whether it's musically or melody or something like that. Generally, the lyrics are written separate from the music. After music's been written or before it doesn't really matter. We sit together and come up with the music and lyrics. I write lyrics sometimes during the day, on the bus whenever. It's all over the place.

What was it like to work with producer Howard Benson?

He's a really great producer He's got great ears. He's done a few really good records and he really focuses on the vocals and the melodies and the harmonies. It was really great to work with a producer that was really vocal-centric.

What was the most important thing you think you learned from him?

I think the biggest thing I learned from working with him is there's so much you can do with your voice and there's so many different weird harmonies. There's things out there that a lot of singers and bands don't use. He introduced me to different melodies and harmonies and different ways of doing things.

You're touring with Nickelback and Breaking Benjamin soon. What will you do when the tour ends?

Probably still be on tour. I don't know exactly where we're going to be. Australia, maybe overseas. It all depends really. I'm sure we'll be on the road somewhere.

Mind Your Mind Interview with Brad Walst and Adam Gontier

Three Days Grace and One-X

The collaboration that went into the bearing of One-X is one that was borne out of a need to confront feelings of loneliness and isolation that ironically came from being constantly surrounded by other people. It is about feeling like an outsider. And it is about realizing that you’re not alone in these feelings.

Bassist Brad Walst puts it as, “…It's weird how you can still feel alone in a crowd of people. In fact the only ones we could really relate to were the true fans. They know what's going on inside your head because they are the ones that are hearing it in your music."

So in another twist of irony, the band confronted isolation by isolating themselves and taking their acoustic guitars to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Ontario. What they came up with, following in the footsteps of their first knock-out album, is the TRUTH.

On their One-X tour, Three Days Grace vocalist, Adam Gontier and Walst, meet up with mindyourmind to chat a bit and put on a FaNtAsTiC show afterwards, including a cover of Chris Isaak’s, Wicked Game. Needless to say, it was a killer show!

Barry Stock Interview

On January 21, Kore Scott, Bruno Souza, and I had the pleasure of talking to Three Days Grace lead guitarist, Barry Stock from the WBRO studio in Marengo, Indiana. He talked to us by phone from Cincinnati, Ohio. The other band members: Adam Gontier (lead vocals), Neil Sanderson (drums and backing vocals), and Brad Walst (bass and backing vocals), unfortunately, could not join in on the interview.

Three Days Grace formed in 1997 in Norwood, Ontario, Canada. The band was formally named Groundswell in 1992, but switched to Three Days Grace in 1997 six years before their first record release. When I asked the reason for the name switch, Stock replied, “I don’t really know much about the name Groundswell or where that came from. When they changed it at the time they just figured, you know, that they needed a better name and Brad came up with the Three Days Grace name. Funny at the time he was actually taking accounting in school and it was kind of an accounting term, three days grace period. He just heard that and he just thought it really related to the band. It had a real sense of urgency and it sort of fit the band.” Furthermore, when the band was named Groundswell, they were a quintet but in 1997 they subtracted two members and changed the name.

It was in Stock’s preteen years that he first discovered his love of music. “When I was in my younger teens, we all had friends that played in bands and stuff. I remember they would have parties over at the rec center near where we lived and I used to sneak out and go over there and just peek through the window and watch these guys play,” Stock recalls. “I remember watching this guitar player, who probably at the time was a teenager himself, but, I was so young that I just looked at that guy as a big Rock God. And that started it for me.” Stock actually started out on drums but his father’s aversion to the “racket” prompted Stock to do away with his drum set. It was on his thirteenth birthday that Stock’s father bought him his first guitar. He decided from that day forward he would find a way to make music his career.

Stock would finally get the break he had been looking for in 2003, when he officially joined the ranks of Three Days Grace. At first, he was unsure as to whether he should join the band. Stock was already involved with another rock band at the time, but between being approached by Neil Sanderson and the release of the band’s self-titled debut album, Stock was drawn in and finally joined Three Days Grace. Their first single, “I hate everything about you” topped American charts and reached number two on the Canadian Mainstream, Alternative and Active Rock Charts. The band received a few nominations in America and Canada but did not obtain the win for this record. With newfound success in their back pocket, the band jetted off on their first tour. Along with touring America and Canada, they crossed the Atlantic and toured in Europe, Australia, and Brazil. Bruno Souza, a foreign exchange student at the high school, asked about the band’s experience in his home country of Brazil and Stock replied, “Still to this day [it] is one of my favorite memorable shows because the response we got from the audience was amazing. They all knew the stuff and they were advertising it really well. It was awesome to go to another country and have 30,000 people singing your songs. It was completely overwhelming for us. It was awesome.” The whole of Europe and Amsterdam in particular were among Stock’s preferred touring destinations as well as Brazil.

However, like most great bands, Three Days Grace would face a major obstacle. In the course of touring, the band’s front man, Adam Gontier, found himself tangled up in the world of drugs. It was not long before they began rehearsals for their second record that Gontier admitted he was having a struggle with substance abuse. “He sort of came forward that he had a drug problem,” Stock says. “So, when we got off the road for the last record, he went into rehab and so the rest of us in the band, we went into rehearsals right away and started working on music for the new record, One-X. So, by the time he got out and cleaned himself up, we sort of reflected a lot of that into this new record.” Such songs as “Pain” and “Animal I have become” recounted the fight of addiction, stemming from Gontier’s firsthand experience. The songs chronicle isolation and a “darker side” of one’s personality. Stock explains, “A lot of people who have these problems tend to feel like they’re the only one that feels that way about themselves. [And] when you’re an addict, a lot of times you feel like you’re secluded and you’re the only one and you don’t want to tell anybody or you don’t want to ask for help. You’re a bit ashamed sometimes.” Stock basically expressed that the record came mostly from Adam’s battle and how the rest of the band took it. “That’s really what the record is about, One-X. That’s kind of what [the record] is about exactly is that you’re not the only one. When you feel that way, no matter what’s going on in your life, whether you’re depressed or anything, you know, you’re not the only one and you should share that and express it. There are other people like you and you can help each other,” Stock concludes. In support of Adam and the record, Three Days Grace headlined a tour called “Three Days to Change” in which they “gave back” to the community that saved Gontier’s life. The tour took the band to different rehabilitation centers to help uplift people who have unfortunately fell into troubling times themselves and could use the support and understanding which the band gratefully obliged to.

Kore Scott asked for some words of advice and encouragement for new and upcoming bands and so Stock replied, “You know, what I would say to the new bands is just don’t get discouraged. The music business is a really tough business to get into. Just don’t get discouraged that easily. [I grew up with a lot of people] who gave up, I think, too early. They didn’t give it enough of a shot. Just be true to yourself and just give it everything you’ve got. I mean, it’s like anything in your life, if you’re really passionate about it, you really need to stick with it. If you really, really give it a hundred percent, something’s going to happen at some point, you know what I mean? That’s probably the best advice I can give. Just keep writing songs and enjoy doing what you’re doing. Just don’t give up too easily, don’t be that discouraged about something. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel if you stick with it and you’re really passionate about it.”

Personally, I think this advice is universal for any career one could pursue. Passion is what will keep one going at the end of the day and Stock conveyed this intensely. He mentioned that even though he didn’t make very much money at first when he was chasing a music career, he kept going. But just like he said, “something’s going to happen at some point” and it did.

The band is now on tour with Staind. The touring schedule is only set around the U.S. and Canada but they hope to move on to other countries like touring from the last record. Their touring schedule and other information on the group can be found on the band’s official webpage at www.threedaysgrace.com.

Их первый сингл «I Hate Everything About You» завоевал американские чарты и стал вторым в Канадском Главном Альтернативном и Альтернативного Рока чартах.

Web Exclusive: A conversation with Three Days Grace's Brad Walst
Three Days Grace bassist Brad Walst recently spoke with the Sun Herald on the band's current tour and their upcoming show at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum with Seether, Red and Breaking Benjamin.

Your sophomore album, One-X, already has three singles to come off of it, with a possible fourth one upcoming. Four singles off one album? Sounds like you guys are doing pretty well for yourselves these days.

"It's hard to believe that all those songs went to No. 1. It's pretty crazy and we're pretty fortunate. You never expect it and we've been very fortunate to have people respond to it the way they have."

You've doubtless heard of the sophomore record curse. How do you think, musically, you avoided that?

"Well, I think we really took our time. We got off the road and it had been two straight years from the first album. We weren't really communicating as a band that well, so we really took time and took time with family and friends and each other and just did a lot of hanging out and got back to being friends again. Then, basically, we got out of the city in Toronto, and left all the pressures behind. Neil has a cabin in Northern Canada and we went up there with some meat, beer and acoustic guitars and sat down with what we wanted to get out of this next record. That's where 'One-X' came from. Everybody wants a new album, but if you take time and write it for yourself, you'll always avoid that curse. We grew up in the country, and moved to Toronto just to make music. We grew up playing acoustic guitars around the campfire and that's what we wanted to get back to. What our roots were."

"Well, I think, you know, the first album, you have 10 years to write it, and that had to do with a lot of our personal things that happened at home. Once we got on the road, we started seeing parts of the world and we matured as people, I think. We went through some hard times and hopeful times, with (vocalist Adam Gontier's addiction to pain medicine) and rehab. But I think this album has a little more hope in it because we were around a hopeful situation of Adam getting clean and better, so I think that definitely helped."

The band toured through some group homes and rehab centers last year. What was that like and what was the response?

"It was pretty amazing because we were obviously around Adam a lot during rehab but we didn't really get to see the actual places that helped him out. It was amazing, the energy we got to feel from these people, because you could tell the music really helped them. For us, that was the first time it really hit home for us. It was like, 'Whoa, this is bigger than we think.' We were giving back to the community that helped him. That was important for us. It's just that feeling you're so overwhelmed because we talked to him a lot about it. But listening to him talk to other people about it, it's totally different vibe. It just hit home and and we realized that we were doing an amazing thing for these people."

So how's this tour going so far? What have some of the highlights been?

"I think we're just doing some amazing shows. It's like, 5,000 to 8,000 seaters and it's surreal to see the way we've elevated to these levels and it's just a great package. Breaking Benjamin, Seether and Red, it's amazing to get all of these fans out together. There have been many highlights. We've closed down amphitheaters and you look up and there's 15,000 people waiting to see you play. It's pretty surreal. It's amazing, man, and we're just going along with this package and hopefully we can just keep going and rocking America like we have been."

Three Days Grace played Biloxi last year, only a year after Katrina. Are you looking forward to coming back to the area?

"Yeah, yeah. I think that was with Staind... .Wasn't it the first show back in that arena? It was pretty awesome to see people out and in that building after such a terrible thing. Yeah, I love that whole Coast there, it's beautiful. It's pretty sad to see all the buildings come down, but it's great to see how fast things come up. We love it there, man, and we always have a great rock show. It seems people really appreciate rock and roll down there."

What's next for the band? Working on any new material?

"We've started to write already, actually. We have about two or three songs now and we're slowly getting back into the writing mode, which is hard sometimes to do on the road, because it's a stale environment sometimes. We're going to take some time over Christmas, then do a Canadian run, then back down south for the spring and that might be it. We'll go back in and start to get another record together."

On The 3rd Day Of Grace

I was slightly bummed out that 3 Days Grace wasn’t able to do an in-person interview with me while they were on tour. I understand they are quite busy so I started to catch up on some research for an email interview.

What do you ask a band who has done everything? They’ve had not only one but two Platinum albums but I’m sure you already knew that considering you own both of them. (And if you don’t, you should!) After gathering some dirt, I sent off the questions and impatiently awaited their response. I wanted to know the answers just as badly as you!

So here they are, the answers you wanted to know about from the start of Groundswell to Adam in rehab and back on tour.

Shout!: Can you please give a brief description on how the band formed?

Neil Sanderson: Third day of grade 9, I met Adam in the smoking section at high-school. We got a band together. I lived about a 30 second walk from school, so we’d jam at my house at lunch, and sometimes fill my bedroom full of people and rock out for them. We moved to Toronto at 17 and started playing everywhere, and eventually some record companies started coming out to our shows.

S!: You all started out as Groundswell, why the name change?

Neil: We were kids when we formed the first band, and as we went, a couple of members left, and are music had drastically changed, so we decided to start fresh.

S!: Most bands suffer with numerous lineup changes. Why do you feel this lineup works so well?

Neil: Because we’re all best friends. It never feels like business. We know how to communicate with each other and not blow up over silly things. Bands that argue and fight all the time never last. We learned how to deal with things constructively…oh and we’re all good at playing our instruments.

S!: Being from Canada, was it hard to cross over to the US mainstream music scene?

Neil: Well we’ve been touring in the USA for a long time now, and we believe that to build a career anywhere you have to tour, tour tour! The best way to gain real fans is to blow them a way at a live show over and over again.

S!: How does it feel to have been nominated at the Juno Awards in 2004?

Neil: It’s always awesome to be recognized for your artwork. We’ve put a lot of work into our albums and for them to surface on this level is amazing.

S!: What is the biggest sacrifice you have made to get where you are today?

Neil: I would say being away from home so much. Time warps when you’re on the road.

S!: In reference to Adam going to rehab in 2005, how did the fans react?

Neil: No one knew until he got out, so I think fans reacted with relief that he was alright.

S!: How was support shown for him during that time?

Neil: Well, from the band’s perspective, we’re all great friends like I said before, so we were a support system for him and did whatever we had to do to help.

S!: One-X was released June of 2006. What did you do differently to prepare for this album compared to your previous ones?

Neil: We actually wrote this record up in Ontario cottage country, away from distractions with acoustic guitars. We decided to go to a place where time didn’t exist, and once we got there, the record pretty much wrote itself.

S!: Is it hard to relive some experiences through these lyrics on stage?

Neil: When we’re on stage, we all zone out into our own worlds, so every night is different in some way.

S!: Is there anything you would change on One-X?

Neil: Nope.

S!: How does it feel to have not only one, but two Platinum albums?

Neil: It’s awesome that people are still buying CD’s. We try to make records that are great from start to finish, and with meaningful artwork and videos,(like the old days) so that people want to be part of the whole Three Days Grace experience, and not just have a couple of songs on a playlist in their ipod.

S!: What has been your favorite stop so far on this tour?

Neil: We were in Japan for a couple shows. Tokyo and Nagasaki, and we hit Hawaii on that tour. It was cool.

S!: Any interesting stories that you’d like to share?

Neil: We opened for the Rolling Stones last year in Regina, Saskatchewan. Mick Jagger was heard saying “I wont make fun of the name of your city…even though that makes me sound like a pussy!” They were awesome guys…very inspiring to see that The Stones were very humble and approachable. That’s what we strive for…we don’t have time for bands with huge egos.

S!: What do you usually do when you get some down time while on tour?

Neil: I play golf as much as I possibly can on the road, usually 2-3 times a week. It’s great to get out and get some fresh air once in a while. I love being on the green.

S!: What can your fans expect from you after this tour?

Neil: We’re writing for the next record and plan to get recording as soon as possible once we’re off the road…we’re kind of workaholics (although it doesn’t really feel like work)

S!: Think of one question you wish someone in my position would ask you and answer it.

Neil: I wish someone would ask me how I’m feeling, and I would answer: “fine thanks, and you?”

S!: Any last words you’d like to say to our readers out there?

Neil: Come drop us a line on MySpace and we’ll see you at a show very soon.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY

Adam: I’m sitting right now at the back, back lounge of my bus just trying to relax ya know.

What if you were given the opportunity to turn your life around, if someone looked you in the face when you had no hope left and said, “This is it my friend… How will you use your three days of grace?”
Adam: Last couple days of tour have been tough they’ve been hard ya know um there’s been a lot going on ya know in my personal life.

Naomi: I don’t know any addicts that aren’t in pain emotionally ya know I don’t believe just get high just to get high they’re covering up something, something’s there right?

After years of struggling with drug abuse, Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace walked through the doors of CAMH (Center for Addiction & Mental Health) in hopes of finally turning his life around.

A year and a half later, Adam returned to the same place that saved his life. He performed in front of 300 people in recovery as well as his fans.

THIS IS HIS STORY…

Adam: If I hadn’t given up on my drug choice I’d probably be in jail or I’d be dead so anyway that’s that. Haven’t given up smoking yet…

Brad: Our last record our first record we toured for 20 months straight and I think ya know the road got the better of us Adam mostly.

Naomi: I did know that he lost himself in the love of music and that’s when I really got frightened.

Adam: It was before we hit the road when I actually started to really get into some severe drug abuse. I could’ve easily overdosed or of not woken up. We’ve been doing an acoustic sort of tour at the same time as our full on rock show. We come to different rehab centres.

Brad: I think it’s pretty cool that we’re back in the exact place that he came to, ya know get back to the same community that’s given so much to us. It’s pretty amazing.

He invited people up to the microphone to ask questions; Adam tried to answer as many questions as he can.

Naomi: There’s a lot of people that have family members and friends that are rock bottom and rock bottoms a scary scary place.

Adam: You know for me it’s a chance to talk and the main reason I’m doing is so that I can talk to young people about the fact that turning there life around ya know is very very possible.

Adam: I thought I was the only person who knew; obviously the guys in the band noticed it, the change in my behaviour, they noticed and they definitely knew something was up.

Pain without love

Brad: We just did a Canadian tour and basically any chance we could we went to any treatment centres and we did small little shows and most of the time it was just Adam on acoustic we haven’t really had the chance to do a full band thing, so it’s pretty cool.

You’re sick of feeling numb

Adam: The lowest point were the few times I felt myself ya know close to being arrested or having my life in jeopardy walking through terrible terrible neighbourhood, walking around trying to “score”

Neil: Ya know as an artist, we have an opportunity to maybe give people a new perspective on things that they wouldn’t think of otherwise through music. That’s a pretty powerful thing if you can harness it.

Brad: Pretty amazing feeling man because you go through all of this stuff as a group and when you’re expanded to the public it’s pretty amazing to see how many people can relate to your problem.

Brad: Oh Adam, Adam came to us with the lyrics and it’s really revolved around what we went through with his addictions and I really think people can relate to that.

Pain I can’t get enough

Adam: For me it’s been incredible way to release and get everything out and ya know just not hide anything ya know just put it all out there, if you’re comfortable with that ya know in your music it’s a really great way to just express everything.

Question: What made you start using drugs?

Adam: Ah I dunno I think it was a combination of a few different things, there was just a lot of stuff going on in my life so I kind of felt like I needed a break from that.

Start of Never Too Late plays

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: Addiction is a multi-fastening problem that can manifest in many different ways.

Adam: I think it was at someone’s party or whatever and got offered one and I had one and it was a great feeling and never thought anything about it again.

This world will never be…

Adam: I think a few days later I ran into the same person who had the same thing and I was like “oh hey, I’ll try one of those again.”

I will not leave alone everything that I own to make you feel like its not too late, it’s never too late

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: We can become addicted to many things and we have as individuals different propensities…

Naomi: Recovery is kind of a word that’s put around all the time and I think people can think I’m getting clean and it’s an event and now I just did it, I’m at a detox and it’s out of my system but it’s after that, that’s really difficult.

Adam: She’s been incredible man, she has been through the same sort of situation and yeah she was just incredible. If it wasn’t for her I’d probably wouldn’t have been in a good place now.

To make you feel like it’s not too late, it’s never too late...

Naomi: You look in the mirror you haven’t seen yourself in 10 years ya know in our lifetime.

Adam: We’ve been together for so long, we’ve known each other since high school and she’s my wife and she’s my best friend as well. She didn’t leave ya know she stuck around and got me through.

Now and again we try to just stay alive, Maybe we’ll turn it around cause it’s not too late it’s never too late.

Naomi: Addictions always on your shoulder doing push-ups, head folds right? squawking in your ear saying “what’s up bud? Pick up, pick up.”

Adam: It’s a really tough thing to go through even if you have a support system without one it’s really really difficult. Its okay to talk about it and that it’s possible to turn your life around. Ya know even if you feel alone, people feel alone but there certainly not alone.

Question: What other aspects of your life like that you noticed have changed you that you enjoy more?

Adam: Pretty much everything in my whole outlook has changed ya know. For quite a few years I was seeing things and I was looking through a blurred set of eyes ya know what I mean? I was a zombie. I actually have emotions, I feel things and stuff which I never had before so I think it has affected every aspect of my life, my relationships with people, ya know my family, my friends and my band mates, everybody

Adam: I started taking percocets ya know like the very weak version of hydrocodone. At the end of it I was taking about 10 to 20, 80 milligrams of OxyContin and just eating them, crushing them, chew them in half. My third time I really saw was knock it off time releasing yeah it was a nice time.

Adam: I was using them every single day and I couldn’t start my day up and wake up without them so.

Naomi: He just broke down and just cried and said ya know I’m sorry I need help and he was scared to go to rehab but I called everyone I knew in the hospital and said this is the life or death situation, he’s in big trouble and he needs to do something.

I can’t escape this hell so many times I’ve tried

Adam: While I was in rehab I was just feeling so many different crazy emotions and all this stuff I was writing so much down ya know just getting everything out on paper.

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: Once you’re addicted, there’s a course _______ course. That is extremely hard to break regardless of with what’s going on.

Somebody help me tame this animal

Naomi: The thing is I knew Adam was using and I knew there was a problem. I didn’t know to the extent. He had a high tolerance.

Adam: Just because of all the I guess lying and all the, just manipulation that I put her through ya know she could’ve just easily left.

So what if you can see the darker side of me

Adam: The biggest thing now is on stage I actually can feel the show whereas before like we played so many huge great shows. We went to Brazil, Australia, all over the world and ya know I just didn’t feel anything.

No one will ever change this animal I have become

Adam: So I found myself really putting my life on the line just to try and find something and try to explore something so you know those times while you were on the road.

Naomi: I finally just said to him when he got off his two year tour I know what’s going on and you can’t really hide from this demon anymore.

Question: I was just wondering what got you through the mental aspects of the addiction like if there was a specific person.

Adam: Yeah I spent a lot of time with my wife Naomi during that whole period when I got out of the hospital I was trying to sort of live a different life style. She was the only one that was like with me everyday beside me and kind of helping me through that.

Naomi: He used music as a therapy and he just wrote and wrote and wrote.

Adam: Yeah it’s sort of a really personal record.

Brad: We’re back where we started, it’s a new energy. We’ve learnt a lot about the road and how to stay healthy on the road and how to protect ourselves.

Adam: The timing ya know when we were supposed to write the record or whatever, the timing was really really good.

Do you think about everything you’ve been through, you never thought you’d be so depressed…

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: Often many people step forward people in the public eye and say this isn’t so foreign or awful this is a __ like any other. When people step forward, in that way it’s hugely affective.

Adam: When I felt strong enough to come back to the band and ya know started playing with them again I had all these lyrics and all the stuff I had written down and they had music that they had been working on so it worked out really well.

No time for goodbye, he said as he faded away, don’t put your life in someone’s hands they’re bound to steal it away

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: People who have addictions are like people with any other kind human pain in suffering they deserve understanding, they deserve help, that’s a tremendous myth.

If you wanna get out alive oh run for your life

Neil: It’s definitely a good little moment for us because we are certainly all collectively are in a different place than we were before and now we’ve kind of realised what we need to do to continue on this journey which ya know a dream come true being able to do this everyday.

Adam: I run into people who tell me that this song means something to them, there’s a lot of people out there that have gone through many more things that I’ve been through. Just to hear how our music affects people on there own level is amazing.

If I stay it won’t be long till I’m burning on the inside

Adam: My lyrics have definitely helped me every night I have a chance to get on stage and kind of sing gets a lot of it out so yeah, they are really really helpful.

Adam: It’s gonna be quite the show today. I just normally go into the place and talk to people and it’s not so much about the music its more of the message but today it seems a lot of people here in Toronto that are fans of the band and have gone through some things. So yeah today’s gonna be a good show.

Question: In your opinion what’s the best thing you could do for a person as a friend to help them get through it?

Adam: You should get together with there family, the family that they have, the friends that they have and confront them about the issue. So many people don’t wanna talk about it when they have a problem because they feel like they’ve done something wrong. Just get together with the friends that they have and actually talk to them tell them to get help. Good luck.

I will not leave alone everything that I own

Adam: I came to this facility CAMH here in Toronto and I got cleaned up.

Dr. Paul Garfinkel: The message that I read is the nature of addiction and how treatment can make a huge difference.

Adam: The biggest thing for me is if I could give out just a tiny bit of inspiration through ya know some people that don’t really feel like they can change, ya know that’s what it’s about.

Maybe we’ll turn it around cause it’s not too late, it’s never too late

Adam: It’s actually been a quite a year and 8 months or something.

And if there’s something wrong

Adam: Thank you for the support everybody, it means a lot to me and us.

Adam: What a band eh? These guys are amazing ya know that?

Question: Now that you’re sober, how supportive is your band?

Adam: They’ve always really been supportive of everything that I’ve done. You know we’re like a family we’ve been together for so long, in that first year of high school and we’ve been together ever since. They are just like my brothers.

Question: What comes first to your system of music?

Adam: Uh that’s a good question, we actually write as a band. We all sit together with acoustic guitars and we write songs. A lot of the times like a few of the songs I had lyrics for them while I was going through rehab. I wrote lyrics and the guys were writing some music so but we as a group tend to write the songs together ya know we sit together and come up with the best songs we can.

Question: So when you guys were just starting out did you ever think that your music would reach so many people?

Adam: No I don’t think I ever really thought about it too much, I mean I knew I always wanted to be a musician and I wanted to play music no matter no what but no I never ever really thought that it would’ve sort of get to the point where it does reach so many people. So we’re really lucky to have that happen.

Crowd clapping

Adam: I feel like I should bow or something *bows* Thank you very much. Thank you very much you guys rock!

Crowd Cheers

Adam: For the future for myself all I can do is take it ya know day by day and just try to focus on everyday and get through everyday.

THE END

Toronto's Three Days Grace stays true to old-school rock

In a time of high-flying celebrity, when fame is just a sordid scandal or Internet fad away, Three Days Grace has secured success the old-fashioned way: It has earned it.

The Toronto quartet has become a staple of the airwaves and the chart tops after years of slogging it out on the road, steadily honing its melodic hard rock into a formidable radio-ready formula. Having notched a pair of platinum albums and a sturdy batch of hits -- "Home," "I Hate (Everything About You)," "Pain" -- the group has embarked on its first arena headlining tour, a cross-country run with fellow neo-grunge acts Breaking Benjamin and Seether that brings it to the Palace on Friday.

"It's been cool to see things grow. We've been out for almost two years on this record," says drummer Neil Sanderson. "We see this tour, how many fans are coming out to the shows, the size of the arenas, and it's really exciting for us, because there haven't been any shortcuts."

As you'd expect from their music -- a typically dark-edged, post-Nirvana sound -- Sanderson and his band mates are an earnest, no-nonsense lot. Three Days Grace works from the old-school rock rule book, where chops count, hard work goes a long way, and keeping it real -- as in, no backing tracks in concert -- is everything.

"We get asked a lot for advice for aspiring musicians. We say: 'Remember that it's a long road,' " says Sanderson. "Even if you're just talking about touring. All these towns we're playing that we had never heard of in America -- we've been to these places eight, 10 times now. If you blow their minds at a show, they'll definitely keep coming back. And we've seen it grow like that.

"We take it seriously and take our musicianship seriously."

While Sanderson and company have been toiling out on the road, the scene back home in Toronto has lit up -- but not with bands like Three Days Grace. The city's arty indie-rock world, led by acts such as Broken Social Scene, is arguably the epicenter of alternative music in 2008. Sanderson knows his band doesn't fit the mold, and there's no love lost when he talks about the much-hyped happenings in his hometown.

"I think the whole hipster scene, where fans are too cool to even go to a show -- I don't know. If you're into that, if that's what makes you happy, that's cool I guess," he says. "But anybody who tries too hard to be part of anything like that may deep down have a self-confidence problem."

For Three Days Grace, he says, the key is plowing ahead, ignoring trends and maintaining the band's own identity as it seeks to connect with fans looking for tuneful, introspective hard rock. The group's sophomore album, "One-X," is brimming with starkly personal work by vocalist Adam Gontier, who wrote much of the material after a successful stint in rehab for an addiction to prescription pills.

"One of the major reasons we've stayed true to ourselves is because of what we write about: direct observations about our own lives," says Sanderson, 29. "We always write from a genuine place, and everything comes from us -- the songs, the videos, the artwork. We've been a band since I was 14 years old, and we've always had a vision on what we wanted to convey.

"There's so much contrived (stuff) out there. People are really looking for something real."
____________________________________________________________________________

Three Days Grace bounds towards bigger venues

Neil Sanderson, drummer for Canadian rockers Three Days Grace, is enjoying the larger venues his band has been frequenting for much of their latest tour.

"We get to blow stuff up onstage now," Sanderson said from a tour stop in Greensboro, North Carolina, as his group winds down its most successful road jaunt to date. "We like to put in as much production and lights as we can. The seizure factor has gone way up."

Local fans will be able judge for themselves when the flashy extravaganza, which also will feature Breaking Benjamin and Seether, makes a stop at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday.

But while the four-piece from Norwood, Ontario, now calls arenas and amphitheaters its home, Sanderson remembers the days when he and his band mates -- singer/guitarist Adam Gontier, guitarist Barry Stock, and bassist Brad Walst -- happily paid their dues at smaller venues such as the Machine Shop and Detroit's St. Andrews Hall.

It's great to be able to see everybody in a smaller place," Sanderson said. "But the same people who were there in the early days are still there for us. We've opened up for other bands too, and that's a good way to get things rolling, but to be able to sell a ticket to a Three Days Grace show is really cool. We've worked really hard to get to the level where we are right now, and we're very lucky. We've been out for almost two years on this record."

While chalking up all that mileage, Sanderson noticed that 2006's "One-X" is a hit with fans, who seem to enjoy the newer tunes as much as radio standards such as "I Hate Everything About You," a hit from their self-titled Jive Records debut.

"We put a lot of singles on the radio," he said, "and we play those songs at the show. But we also play a lot of album tracks, and the crowd sings along just as much for those. These days, you have to make an awesome album. I think we're getting back to where people want to hear real stuff, since so much is contrived these days."

He said he believes those contrivances are one of the main reasons the record industry continues to struggle year after year.

"A lot of bands only concentrate on the singles right now," he said, "and that's one of the reasons there's so much downloading. But if you make good stuff, the response will come from a real place. We want to make albums that are good all the way through, like the classic Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin records."

When he's not busy recording those albums or crafting an elaborate stage show, Sanderson devotes time to Herbie Rocks, a yearly celebrity online auction he created with his wife, Janin. Proceeds benefit Operation Herbie, a charity group that funds worldwide medical treatment for children. The latest auction is set for May 3, and Sanderson said the latest donations left him a bit star-struck.

"This year is exponentially bigger than last year," he said. "Michael Jordan sent us some stuff; David Beckham sent me a jersey. I have so much great memorabilia in my house right now. I basically just collect the stuff and try to talk to people while I'm on the road, and try to get them excited about what we're doing."

After a long tour, Sanderson is excited about getting to work on a new Three Days Grace album. After their current excursion ends in early April, the only traveling the band anticipates is a trip to some quiet corner of Ontario to work on its new CD.

"We're going to dive right into the new record," he said. "We'll just let it happen. That seems to work for us. We'll probably leave and go north of Toronto again to record it. That seemed to work pretty well for us in the past. It cuts down on the distractions. We never have any outside influences when we write. We write with acoustic guitars and we all help with the arrangements. We'll just hammer it out, and stay true to ourselves."

Sanderson believes that approach is the key to the band's continued success, right down to the packed arenas.

"We've been doing this band since we were 17," he said, "and we've realized there are no shortcuts. All these kids are watching 'American Idol,' and thinking there's a shortcut, and there's not. We know that you have to build it from the ground up.

"Since we've been coming over here, we've played all these small towns, and we've been to each one eight or nine times. We just keep coming back and putting everything into it. And it's paying off for us."

Three Days Grace grows up on the road

Ever wonder how rock stars spend their time off?

Three Days Grace bass player Brad Walst has found an interesting way to fill the days between tours and recording sessions.

“I’m a bass player and an apple farmer now. I know, it’s weird,” he said with a chuckle.

Yes, Walst said he is a part-time apple farmer, a sort of Johnny Appleseed by day and a sort of Johnny Rotten by night. He is the proud owner of Applewood, a “big piece” of property in Norwood, Ontario, Canada, that is home to 80 apple trees.

But don’t expect to see any Three Days Grace apple juice at the merchandise table when the band performs at the i wireless Center in Moline next week.

“Not yet, but maybe someday,” the 31-year-old said.

Walst’s decision to trade the hustle and bustle of Toronto for the small town charm of Norwood (population 1,300) came down to one simple need: rest. When a band has either been touring or recording for nearly five years straight, time away from the tour bus becomes all the more important.

“We’ve been living in Toronto for about 12 years, and I found every time I came home from the road, I just couldn’t relax. I guess I’m just a country boy at heart.”

Norwood is, after all, an important place in the history of the alt-metal band Three Days Grace. It’s the hometown of Walst and lead singer Adam Gontier, who met in their teens, not knowing the musical friendship formed in rural Canada would lead to international fame and millions of records sold.

It nearly all came to an end in 2005.

“By the end of the first record, we were pretty distanced from each other, and Adam’s problems had a lot to do with it,” Walst remembered.

The band released its self-titled debut album in 2003 and spent the next two years touring in support. Crowds swelled as the first single, “I Hate Everything About You,” and the second, “Just Like You,” topped both U.S. and Canadian rock charts.

So did opportunities to fall into the old cliche of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

“We just got overwhelmed with everything,” Walst said. “When you’re a young band coming from a small town and getting a little bit of success, everyone becomes your friend and you can do anything you want anytime of the day or night. It’s a pretty scary environment if you don’t keep it under control.”

Everyone struggled with their new rock star lives, he said, but no one more than Gontier, who eventually entered a Toronto rehab clinic for substance abuse. After completing his treatment, he reunited with Walst, drummer Neil Sanderson and guitarist Barry Stock and headed into the studio once again.

“It’s definitely showed us we’re a tight unit — we’ve been together for 15 years — and we can’t let anything stop us,” Walst said.

By March 2006, the group’s sophomore album, “One-X,” had hit record stores. Three No. 1 hits landed on Billboard charts: “Animal I Have Become,” “Pain” and “Never Too Late.” Three Days Grace — along with opening acts Breaking Benjamin and Seether — is now on the third leg of a tour that began back in 2006.

“It’s been nonstop pretty much since April of ’06. Two years go by like that. You feel like you’ve been in a time warp,” Walst said.

Future plans for Three Days Grace involve wrapping up the tour in early April and returning home to Canada. From there, he said, the group will continue writing songs with the hope of recording a new album that can be released before 2009. Or not.

“It’s not something we want to rush. On ‘One-X,’ we didn’t rush. There are some people in the business who want to get it out as quick as possible, but you can’t rush creativity. In the end, nobody is going to argue with you if you’re just trying to get it right.”

Q&A with Three Days Grace

Preview by Dave Richards
Toronto's Three Days Grace will take more than three days off when their two-year tour behind their smash second CD, "One X," ends on April 2.

Boosted by heavy, cathartic, yet still-melodic rock-radio hits such as "Pain," "Animal I Have Become," "Never Too Late," and its latest single "Riot," "One X" helped vault 3DG into headliner status.

Guitarist Barry Stock says they'll reconnect with their families and recharge. Then they'll finish writing the next CD and plan to hit the studio before the year's over. They will also release a DVD in the fall.

Stock talked with Showcase about 3DG and the tour with fellow album-rock mainstays Breaking Benjamin ( "Breath," "Diary of Jane") and Seether ( "Fake It," "Rise Above This").

This seems like the ultimate package for rock fans. How's it working out?

Oh, it's awesome. It's been great. We've touring for a little while now, so we've become really good friends. It's the easiest tour I've ever been on. There's no drama. Everyone gets along really good. It's a quite package. This is a show I would come to see.

"One X" was inspired by the loneliness of the road and the problems it can cause. (Singer Adam Gontier spent time in rehab.) How did you avoid those problems this time?

The last time out was for our first record, and it was all new for us. It's something where you get in a little over your head. Since then, we were able to remedy the problem and figure out what's not good for us. We cleaned up our problems, and we're getting along a lot better. We're closer together. We tried to eliminate people in our lives who are going to cause us trouble and are up to no good.

"One X" covered some dark topics, yet it was a huge hit. What are fans responding to?

Though we have some dark topics as to what's going on with life, I think with Three Days Grace we always have that little twist of hope at the end. "Yeah, this is where I am and this sucks, but I'm getting out of it. I've found a better way." We've heard numerous times people say to us, believe it or not, "You saved my life." Especially with teenagers.

What highlights stand out after two years on the road?

We opened for the Stones a couple nights in Canada. That was pretty awesome. ... They had a party for all their crew and we went. I didn't expect them to show up, but Mick showed up. We had family out to see the shows, wives and Adam's mother, and they're all out there, dancing with Mick. I'm looking up, and my wife is cutting a rug with Mick Jagger.

How hard is it to wind down after a long tour?

Going home, when you've been out so much, is completely awkward. We're all married by now, so you get home, and you're not dealing with just your own life anymore. You're sharing a life with someone else and have to fit into their schedule.

When you get home, it's not dark enough in the room after sleeping on a bus. You're used to tires rolling down the road. It's quiet and never dark enough. It's definitely an adjustment to try to wind it down. It takes a few good weeks.

After the break, what's next?

We just did a show in Detroit at the Palace of Auburn Hills and shot a DVD for that. They brought in a full film crew, so we'll put out a HD DVD in September. And Adam Gontier did a song with Apocalyptica, which is cool. It'll be the single off their record.

Three Days Grace:
Three Days Grace".
Толпы взревели, когда первый сингл “I Hate Everything About You,” а за ним и второй “Just Like You,” заняли ведущие позиции в канадских чартах.
Вот и пришли парни к известной формуле "sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll."
С такими хитами, как “Animal I Have Become,” “Pain” и "Never Too Late" группа 3 раза занимала первое место в чарте Billboard.

Now I`m free to do what I want!!! F*ck OFF!!!

"One X" , в списке которого значатся такие тяжелые и одновременно мелодичные хиты, как "Pain," "Animal I Have Become," "Never Too Late," и последний вышедший сингл "Riot," принес 3DG статус безоговорочных лидеров.

Seether ( "Fake It," "Rise Above This").

- 3DG, Breaking Benjamin, Seether ...

Now I`m free to do what I want!!! F*ck OFF!!!
