LiveDaily Interview: Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace

After struggling for years with addiction, Three Days Grace frontman Adam Gontier is thankful for the help he received from Toronto's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Queen Street facility. He's so grateful that, during his North American tour, he is bypassing the usual afternoon acoustic radio performances to play for rehab and mental-health facilities, as well as homes for troubled children.

"The tours are normally set up where you go to radio stations during the day; you do the typical kind of acoustic thing," Gontier told LiveDaily last month, shortly after his group won a Billboard award for the single "Animal I Have Become." "This was a way for me to sort of give back to that community that turned my life around."

"It was just something that I thought I'd like to do, so I set it up. The biggest thing about it is I want to let kids know and people know that they can talk about it.'"

Gontier--who is joined in the band by drummer/vocalist Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst and guitarist Barry Stock--talked to LiveDaily about his sobriety, the songwriting process for Three Days Grace's latest album, "One-X," and hanging out on MySpace.

LiveDaily: Depression, addiction, those are both "taboo" subjects to talk about. I think that's honorable that you're publicly discussing your problems.

Adam Gontier: That's the biggest thing. People don't want to talk about it, and you have to--especially if you're going through it. You really have to get it out, you know.

How long ago were you hospitalized?

A year and eight months ago.

How are you doing?

I'm doing well. I've been clean since then. I haven't touched anything. I've been doing really well.

I would say that your addiction and subsequent recovery is definitely reflected in the album.

Oh yeah, the lyrics were all sort of written while I was going through that period. It's a really personal record. It's got a lot of my, sort of, journal entries from the last couple years.

The songs "Get Out Alive" and "Time of Dying" are intensely personal..

Yep. Yep for sure. There's a lot of them. "Never Too Late" is another one that hits home as well. It's cool to be able to get up on stage every night and play the songs. It's a way to get things off my chest. It's cool because people relate to it sort of on their own level.

Have you had a lot of fans share their stories with you?

Yeah, quite a few. I spend a lot of time on the Internet, on MySpace, talking to fans and trying to stay connected to them. It's pretty amazing.

Describe the songwriting process for Three Days Grace.

It's kind of all over the place. There's not one specific style that we use. We tend to sit together with guitars and a hand drum and whoever has an idea throws an idea out there, whether it's musically or melody or something like that. Generally, the lyrics are written separate from the music. After music's been written or before it doesn't really matter. We sit together and come up with the music and lyrics. I write lyrics sometimes during the day, on the bus whenever. It's all over the place.

What was it like to work with producer Howard Benson?

He's a really great producer He's got great ears. He's done a few really good records and he really focuses on the vocals and the melodies and the harmonies. It was really great to work with a producer that was really vocal-centric.

What was the most important thing you think you learned from him?

I think the biggest thing I learned from working with him is there's so much you can do with your voice and there's so many different weird harmonies. There's things out there that a lot of singers and bands don't use. He introduced me to different melodies and harmonies and different ways of doing things.

You're touring with Nickelback and Breaking Benjamin soon. What will you do when the tour ends?

Probably still be on tour. I don't know exactly where we're going to be. Australia, maybe overseas. It all depends really. I'm sure we'll be on the road somewhere.

Starting Life Now with Three Days Grace Lead Guitarist Barry Stock
by Troy Rogers

After joining Three Days Grace in 2003 before making his studio debut on the personal, introspective Three days Grace album, One-X, lead guitarist, Barry Stock, has grown both as a musician and person in the six years since joining one of the most popular bands in North America. In the three years between the last album and the newly released Life Starts Now, the guys of Three Days Grace have taken time to grow and to also jump out of the box to not allow themselves to be defined as any one stereotype. In many ways, after touring and maturing as both a band and as individuals, life does start now for Three Days Grace as the band gives fans Life Starts Now, which went wide on September 22.

The day before the release of Life Starts Now, TheDeadbolt went one-on-one with Three Days Grace lead guitarist, Barry Stock, who filled us in on the band's approach to the new album, the significance underneath the lyrics of such new songs as "Break," how Three Days Grace has adapted since forming in 1992, and exactly how life really does start now for Three Days Grace after a three year break between full-length studio albums.

THE DEADBOLT: So what do you guys usually do the night before an album comes out?

STOCK: Well, I never put much thought into what we did on the release of the last album [laughs]. I don't even know what we're going to do. I'm not really sure. It's funny; we've sort of been so busy with stuff going on that we haven't put too much thought into it. We have to keep reminding ourselves, "Oh yeah, it's tomorrow." Not that we need reminding, but we're pretty excited and we'll probably go out and have a celebrational dinner I'm sure.

THE DEADBOLT: Can you talk about how you approached "Life Starts Now" in terms of how you guys have grown as a band?

STOCK: Well, this time around we really wanted to go with something different than what we've done in the past, and that's to go with the sort of clean-cut layered guitar sort of sound. This time around we really wanted to go with more of a bigger room sound. We recorded this time in The Warehouse in Vancouver, Bryan Adams' studio, which is one of the best sounding studios in the world, and it has that awesome big drum sound. We wanted to go with that, more "Zeppeliny" bigness in a different kind of way. You know, a lot of people today think bigness means, "Okay, let's layer eight guitars on this and play the same thing," whereas this time around we wanted to go for more of that big, thick drum sound. It's just more about tone this time and capturing that rawness, as opposed to a lot of layered stuff.

THE DEADBOLT: What's the subtext underneath the title of "Life Starts Now"?

STOCK: "Life Starts Now," for us - I mean, I know for a lot of people they think it sounds really happy. But really what it comes down to is: This time around we came off of the road from the last record and we took time off to spend time with our families, and now things are different for us, too, because we all have families and there's kids involved. And a few of us had to deal with some real personal issues as far as people being sick in our families, death in some cases, and it almost had to take us to that and experience for us to realize that sometimes you've just got to deal with the hand that's given to you. You can moan about it or you can pull your head up and just do your best with it. Again, Three Days Grace has always been that little bit of sense of hope there for people and that's the same thing with us. For us it's just about life starts now. It's just a new sense of freshness.

THE DEADBOLT: The lyrics for "Break" center around breaking away from everything if you can't stand the way this place is. Was that written as a reflection of what's going on in society or the music industry?

STOCK: Again, I think for us it's "the song is almost as easy as it sounds." It's really just about if you don't like the situation you're in or what's going on around you, it's entirely up to you to break out of it. That's it. It's pretty much just breaking out and letting loose. You don't have to be stuck in whatever it is you're dealing with. Whether it's good or bad, it's your choice to make a change.

THE DEADBOLT: Since you guys started Three Days Grace in the early '90s, what's been the most challenging thing in terms of the evolving musical tastes and not changing who you guys are as a band?

STOCK: We still work on how to work well together, and we do a good job of it, but not being so hung up on your own ego and hearing everybody out. That's what we do now. We work on songs, and it's never "two guys like this song" or "one guy hates it and we just do it anyway," for us it's very much about if there's even one guy that has a question on something of the song, he doesn't like a part or he doesn't like a lyric, we always address it. And we really spend the time to make sure all four guys are happy, which is a lot more work to make four guys happy. But at the same time, when we do approach it that way, everybody is happy, all four, and I find that's the best way to be. When everybody is passionate about what they're doing, we have better odds of making greatness.

THE DEADBOLT: How does the U.S. audience impact the band?

STOCK: We love coming to the States. But we're Canadian, obviously, and it's first and foremost, and that's why even this time around we're going to get a Canadian tour to start this stuff. But it's great, whether it's America or anywhere else, it's great having a whole other country standing behind you and believing in what you're doing. And it's great when it's not your country, not your nation, and someone else's. It's just cool that we can expand and get out to everybody. It's great for us.

THE DEADBOLT: What's the latest talk on the tour?

STOCK: Well, we're going to do a Canadian run. It's going to start in mid-November and it's going to take us right up until Christmas.

THE DEADBOLT: So, what was the decision behind the new suit and tie look?

STOCK: [laughs] Well, this time around, again, it's about breaking. Just like the song, it's almost like breaking out of your box. Sometimes we go to being stuck in what we are and here we are. But not necessarily always the way you're dressed and perceived is necessarily the way you are always. Plus, this time the video people freaked out about the pink and for us it was exactly that. It's got nothing to do with colors or what you're wearing, we just wanted to do something a little bit more fun and break out of our box.

The funny thing is with the pink, some people complain and say, "Oh, you're pink? That's not your color." Well, what is my color? I mean, I don't know. Again, we just wanted to clean it up a little bit, we like to dress up. It's nice to put on nice clothes and for us it's just that. It can't all be the doom and gloom, you know what I mean? We've all been that for awhile and it's getting a bit old. Not to say we don't have stuff going on in our lives just like everybody else, you have those moments. For us, we were just trying to step out of our box a little bit and just have a bit of fun.

THE DEADBOLT: And I'm sure you've also had people say, "Oh, you guys clean up really nice."

STOCK: [laughs] Yeah.

THE DEADBOLT: Do you have a set routine when you tackle the writing process?

STOCK: For us it's usually when we come off of the road. There are always little musical ideas of things. But the best thing for us is that we usually come off of the road from the record and take a little time for the family and your own sanity and get away from it for a little bit. Then, in that time, everybody is always working on stuff and we collectively get together and work as a band. That's how we worked in the past and that's how we still work today. Again, it's really important that it's all of us writing, because four heads are definitely better than one, and with us we're always challenging ourselves and each other all of the time. That's how it starts. You just start with a song idea, or it could be someone has a lyric or a piece of music, but we all get together in a room and we all work it out.

THE DEADBOLT: So you don't have a rigid process?

STOCK: No. That's what I mean, there's nothing in stone for us. It's just kind of everybody contributes musically and lyrically, and everybody has got ideas, and then we'll just get into a room and we'll start picking away at things - What do we like best, or where do we want to go with this one?

THE DEADBOLT: How much input do you guys have in the marketing of the band, like with the Super Deluxe packages?

STOCK: You know, alot of that stuff, we have great people around us who come up with neat ideas as well. It's one of those between us and your management and your label [relationships]. We bounce our heads around all of the time, and the fans, too. I mean, a lot of times the fans are really great for that, too, especially if you hear enough, "Oh, you guys should have a little competition on winning this or that." So ideas can come from everywhere. But we definitely look over everything we do.

THE DEADBOLT: What does Three Days Grace have to do these days to stay front, center, and relevant? I mean, the music industry is a lot different than it was in '92.

STOCK: [laughs] Oh yeah, definitely! Music has definitely, definitely changed. I think it's just, again, staying true to your fans. You know, not being phoney. And there's a lot of that going on, people just doing what they do because they think that's what they're supposed to be doing. A lot of bands are big in music because they're trying to be like the band before them. You know what I mean? I don't think it'll last. I think people eventually see through all of that crap. If you stay true to what you are and do what it is you do, I think you'll have some decent longevity for sure. But if you're just making up a bunch of contrived crap that might be alright for a bit, people will always eventually look right through that shit.

"Life Starts" On Tuesday For New Three Days Grace Album
LaunchDaily
9/22/2009

Three Days Grace issues its third album, called Life Starts Now, on Tuesday (September 22nd). The first single from the CD, called "Break," is already off to an explosive start at rock radio. Although the album title sound optimistic, frontman Adam Gontier told us that the record addresses some darker themes: "We've all had to confront death in certain ways -- in our personal lives, in the past, maybe shortly in the future. So this record as a whole, I think, is basically, it's about confronting that, you know, and realizing that we have to face things that we don't normally want to. And it's about asking and trying to figure out how to get through these situations that pretty much everybody goes through."

A Renewed Sense of Urgency with Three Days Grace
23.09.09 CD Reviews by Kristian Partington

Life Starts Now…

Few titles, be they for a novel, a movie, or a compilation of music, carry such heavy weight of optimism as what these three simple words convey. They are at once a statement of resolve, expectation and atonement for a past that may have left the painful scars of growth upon those we love the most.

For a band that has built a ravenous base of fans stretching across the continent with songs of hatred, pain and regret, Three Days Grace appears to have found a new appreciation for the beauty that lies in every corner of the life they have before them.

Last week, as I sat in a non-descript rehearsal space listening to the power of the new songs that make up part of the band’s third album – the pulsating homage to optimism, Life Starts Now – I considered the past that has shaped the way this band makes music. More importantly, I thought about how the new album pays respect to the past in more ways than one but saves all of its reverence for the only thing we all can grasp for certain: the present moment.

I’ve spent countless hours with the humble members of this Canadian hard rock sensation throughout the many years of our friendship. As a friend growing up in the same small town I’ve had a shared perspective on the challenges they’ve faced as individuals and as a band. Before Three Days Grace was an entity, it was simply a talented group of friends with passion, the typical angst of youth and a need for an outlet to harness it all.

After years of stoking the fires of stardom in the world of music, they landed a major record deal and in 2003, the song I Hate Everything About You introduced this band to the world. They really had nothing more to hate than everybody else but with music as an outlet, they’d found a way to release what anger they had. It immediately spoke to a lot of people and the band toured with the relentless hunger necessary to allow true talent to grow.

Their second album built upon the viral success of the first and was fed by the truth of front man Adam Gontier’s battle with the love and hate of addiction. Just as the first record used hard guitars and crushing vocals to speak to those who felt pain or hatred, the second mapped out the bleakness of a life lived in dark shadows where one is beholden to a force seemingly impossible to control.

Life Starts Now is a sign of true progression. Though it took a while for the new compilation to find it way to the fans who’ve craved it, it carries a sense of urgency. It’s embedded with hopeful breaths of emotion and it does so upon a base of musical maturity.

“We always wrote about real stuff but with this one we all had in common the questioning of life itself,” drummer Neil Sanderson told me while we boiled away in his hot tub before their North American CD release last week at the Sony BMG Sound Stage in Toronto. “Each of us had very sobering experiences over the last little while, kind of realizing the volatility of life and we drew from that.” The fact is, each band member has spent the past year and a half in the face of serious illnesses within close family or friends, and these challenges are presented in the new music.

Before, their craft was an outlet for the angst of youth but it has now evolved into a stamp they place upon the very essence of the life before us all. The lyrics are hopeful, as the last lines of the title track state:

"All this pain…Take this life and make it yours…All this hate…Take your heart and let it love again…You will survive this somehow"

The music itself is more intricate than ever before and all members agree that what they love most is the fact that this album is raw. It was written with the live show in mind and each member is playing with a renewed sense of why they love what they do.

Life Starts Now could be a challenge to any of us who find that our days are spent simply treading water – a catalyst to make the most out of our every minute. At the same time, it could be a warning. There is a conflict that can breed when our idea of a good time gets clouded through the chaos of life and we make the wrong choices. Three Days Grace has had a first hand taste and they’ve walked away stronger.

Regardless of the choices they’ve made, they’ve all now had to face the fragility of life directly in the face. The result is a gift to those who love crisp, honest hard rock music and with tours scheduled for the foreseeable future, the entire package, from angst and hate to life-affirming optimism will be packing venues throughout North America.

Three Days Grace is:
Adam Gontier (Vocals, Guitar)
Brad Walst (Bass)
Neil Sanderson (Drums)
Barry Stock (Guitar)

In order to promote the new album, the band decided to play a few select dates in small venues to a few lucky contest winners.

I hate evering about u, Let it die, Time of dying. И новый альбом "Life stars now" с песней Good life, мне нравится альбом,отлично звучит.

Break!

Break

I Hate Everything About You

You're wrong if you think that I'll be just like you Спасибо: 1

Interview with Neil

Every rock band that’s meant to last the test of time needs to be tested at one point or another, and Three Days Grace is no different. After facing drug abuse, recovery and even death around them, the band has come back stronger than ever with their third album Life Starts Now (out now). myMag had chance to speak with drummer Neil Sanderson about rising from the ashes, Led Zeppelin and why we should treat each day like it could be our last.

Congratulations on your new album, you must be stoked that it’s out.
"Yeah, we totally are. It’s been a long time in the making. We poured our hearts into it, so it’s great to finally have it come to the surface. It’s go-time."

Do you guys have any rituals when it comes to celebrating a new album, seeing as this is your third?
"We’ll cheers it for sure. We’ll probably rock it on the bus, too."

What direction did you guys take when heading into the creation of Life Starts Now?
"We wanted to make a record that was different from other rock records. We’ve seen so many records come out that have that kind of formula where it’s super layered guitars, super processed and overproduced. We wanted to make a record that was rawer sounding, and feels like you’re in the room with the band."

What did you guys do production wise to make it sound that way?
"We basically recorded in a big room. It was out at The Warehouse in Vancouver. It’s an awesome studio, one of the best studios in the world. It creates that big, boomy room sound. We actually put the amps in the same room, so it gives that vibe instead of a dry, formulaic sounding record."

2006’s One-X marked a period of time when members of the band were focused on recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. With the title of Life Starts Now seemingly rooted in Carpe Diem philosophy, do you find that the band has now come to embrace the idea of living each day like it’s your last?
"Definitely. Actually, the last couple of years have been really traumatic for some of the band members. We’ve had to confront sickness and death in our close families. It’s hard seeing people who are close to you go through that. I think that really is reflected on Life Starts Now.

The album title reflects having to confront death, and define what life and death is. Also, trying to make the best of the hand that you’re dealt. The fact that today is the first day of the rest of your life, and sometimes all you have to do is try to survive and stay alive because the other option isn’t so good. I think we’ve seen rock bottom on a few levels. So we continue to write about our experiences seeing that."

Have those moments of hitting rock bottom brought you closer as a band?
"Yeah, absolutely. I think we’re closer as a band now then we’ve ever been. Adam [Gontier] just walked by and gave me the finger as I said that. [Laughs] You can put that in there. I think we agree on a lot of things as far as life itself. Each of us has specifically dealt with loss and death in our own ways. So we have that in common. So when it comes time to write a record, we definitely pour all of that into it.

We write about real things, things that we actually go through. I think that’s one of the reasons why fans connect with us because it feels real. It feels real because it is. It becomes real to our fans because it’s genuinely what we’ve gone through. I think it’s what a lot of people go through."

“Break” is the first single off of the album. One of the lines that really struck me was, “Take yourself to higher places…” What inspired that song, and what are those higher places for you?
"‘Break’ represents wanting to get out of this shell that you’re in. I think if you look around you, there are so many things that are set up to influence the way that you live your life. You know, media, television, law, everything. There are so many things that are set up to control the masses by influencing the way that they think and the things that they do. ‘Break’ represents just breaking out of that and thinking for yourself, and not being influenced by other people.

For me, that means the real world. There’s a lot of living to do that people just forget about because they get wrapped up in their little ego-driven lives. There are so many conveniences in the world that I think it’s important that you break out of that and actually see life on the bigger level."

What really helps you remember to break away from negativity in your life?
"I think as we get older it becomes clearer. You see hidden agendas a lot more clearly. There’s a song on the new record called “No More,” which is all about not wanting to live in fear anymore. If people live in fear, they’re easier to control. People who have run the world have known this for a long time. If you keep people scared, they’re more apt to cooperate. That’s why fear drives media. If you look at it, it’s all set up to scare you."

Were there particular bands you were listening to who inspired you to push your own boundaries?
"As far as the sound, we were listening to a lot of old Zeppelin records. Big, big, massive drum sounds. You really feel like you’re in the room. That was probably our biggest inspiration, just that Zeppelin-y type of sound. If you really listen closely, those records sound huge but there’s not a lot actually going on. Sometimes it’s the space between everything that makes everything sound bigger."

Could “higher places” from “Break” then be interpreted as a nod to “Stairway To Heaven”?
"[Laughs] No, no religious references. We’re not a religious band whatsoever."

What was the biggest challenge for you guys while creating this album?
"Nothing really felt challenging. We make a point of not forcing anything. I think the challenge is just getting to the point where you know that you’re ready to go. You know that it’s right. It’s a pretty natural process for us. We’ve been a band for so long that until all four of us are super excited about a song, then it’s still is a work in progress. It’s very rare when we don’t see eye-to-eye on whether something is finished or not."

Have you guys had a chance to hear what the reception’s been like to the album?
"We have, actually. It’s been overwhelmingly good. We’ve been hearing back from people about how fresh it sounds. We really wanted to make something different from everything else that’s been going on right now on the radio. People are recognizing that, which is super cool. We’ve been rehearsing a ton, and we just did a world album premiere thing. We’re on a little bit of a tour right now just doing some interviews and playing from the record. Then we’re launching a Canadian tour in November."

Oh sweet, who will you be going on the road with?
"There’s talk that we’re going to be bringing out The Used. We love those guys, they’re a great band."

Awesome. The Life Starts Now has a really beautiful, striking image for the cover art. Did you guys have a hand in creating that?
"Yeah, that was our concept. Again, it sort of relates to what we were talking about with ‘Break,’ breaking out of the mold of the things that surround you. It’s kind of the destruction of the media. How after shutting out what’s force-fed to you and destroying that part of the world, the result can be natural, real things coming out of it. That’s kind of what that represents with nature actually evolving out of the destruction of technology."

Three Days Grace Gathers Goods For Herbie Rocks

Toronto rock band Three Days Grace is currently collecting goods and gear from fellow musicians, and anyone else of note it, to auction off early next year for Herbie Rocks.

The fundraising initiative was started by the multi-platinum-selling act after it became involved in a gala charity event two years ago for The Herbie Fund, which enables disadvantaged children from around the globe to receive one-time surgical treatment at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. The doctors work pro bono.

“The cool thing about it is we get this number of how much we’ve raised and they say, ‘Okay, we can go out and find four kids to help with this amount of money.’ So we get these reports of four kids that were directly picked up and brought to Toronto and helped,” says Neil Sanderson, drummer for Three Days Grace.

Sanderson met Liisa Palokoski, president of Operation Herbie, in 2007. She asked if Three Days Grace could contribute an item to the auction and they sent in a guitar. “We were on tour with Nickelback and Seether,” recounts Sanderson, “so I got some guitars from them, and it was super successful so she contacted me and said, ‘Would you be interested in doing that on an ongoing basis?’ So we started Herbie Rocks. It’s a separate annual auction and I just go out and collect everything that I possibly can from other bands.”

Last year, through Palokowski’s partner, 5-time NFL Super Bowl champion Marv Fleming in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Sanderson was able to add non-music goods to his eBay auction.

“He shipped a bunch of stuff to me, and it included a framed Michael Jordan signed jersey, a Tiger Woods signed flag from the Masters, a David Beckham signed jersey. It was wicked. It turned out to be great,” says Sanderson, who also got a year lease on a Hummer from Roy Foss Motors to auction off.

The next Herbie Rocks is tentatively slated for March, 2009. He’s not sure if it will be a physical fundraising event or online.

“We’re still trying to refine the best way to go about it because online auctions are kind of weird because sometimes they are set up for bargains and not for fundraising,” he says.
To date, The Herbie Fund has helped more than 600 children from 88 countries receive medical and surgical assistance that would otherwise not be available to them. The Fund can typically help 30 children a year.

Live 'N Loud Meets Three Days Grace
18.10.09 Interviews by Nour Haik

Canada’s favorite rock band, Three Days Grace, was back with a new album this past September. Called “Life Starts Now”, this album shows a grown band, one that wants to show the world the great things in life, with messages of hope through their heavy guitars and drums.

The band was at the end of their promo tour as they stopped by Montreal on October 13th to play a few songs at the TV station Musique Plus and the answer a few journalist's questions afterward.

Live ‘N Loud Magazine’s interviewer Vanessa Leclair met with Neil Sanderson (drums) and Barry Stock (guitar) who took the time to answer a few questions about “Life Starts Now”, touring and also answer a few unusual questions that will let you know them a little bit more!

Interview done by: Vanessa Leclair

Three Days Grace vs French Fans

Live ‘N Loud (LNL): Your last show in Montreal was in January 2008 in a sold out Metropolis. Do you agree when people says that the music market in a French province is more difficult to reach?

Neil Sanderson: I don’t think so really, but we’re from Toronto, so it’s only 5 hours. *laughs* We get here pretty quickly! I actually find that the crowds here are a little less inhibited and I think they’re more emotionally into the music and it feels like the crowd here listens a little bit closer, which is cool. Maybe there’s a little bit of a language barrier, we don’t speak a whole bunch of French but our singer, his last name is French, we’ve got that going for us!

Barry Stock and Neil: Gontier *pronounced with a French accent*

LNL: Would you learn French if you had to?

Neil: Juste un peu ! [Just a little bit]

LNL: Are you one of those who failed French class?

Neil: No! I passed this class with flying colors! I can get by actually. I went to France and I was kind of forced [to speak it] and I was surprised at how much French I could speak. It sounds ridiculous when I talk it!

Barry: I didn’t like that I was forced to learn it when I grew up, because you had to take it in school, I kind of regret that though now. I wish I had paid attention a little more!

LNL: Yeah, most people I talk to they say that. But it’s kind of like me when I speak in English, with my French accent *laughs*

Barry: You can finish a sentence at least!

Neil: Exactly! *laughs*

Life Starts Now: Evolving As A Band

LNL: How did Three Days Grace evolve between the “One-X” album and “Life Starts Now”?

Barry: This time around we wanted to do something different as far as challenge our selves individually and as a group musically. We all wanted to play a little more, go for a different sound. We went to The Warehouse, Bryan Adams’ studio, this time around and recorded “Life Starts Now” to get more of that a bigger, “boomier”, drum sound. Not such of a layered sound like everybody’s been doing for years. Bigger layering, more guitars, thinking that’s the answer to get a bigger sound. We wanted to go back to our roots more, like classic rock bands that we like and try to record in that matter. It’s just as big as a sound but just recorded differently with more of a bigger drum sound. Not so much layered guitars and stuff.

LNL: Now that the album is released, is there something you wish you would be able to change on it?

Barry: Yeah, I think there’s a typo in one of the…

*everyone laughs*

Neil: No, not at all. It is tough to put your stamp of approval on something you’ve been working so hard for, but at a certain point you just have to release it to the world. Within the band we have a fine balance. I am a bit of a perfectionist, to a fault where I always want to keep on working on something, but it balances with the rest of the band. [The new album has] been really well received by the people, and they can hear what we were going for. It goes with what Barry was saying: every other band is trying to make this over produced mechanical sound, layered record, and we didn’t want to do that. When you listen to the record it feels like you’re in the room with the band and this is what we were trying to achieve. Yeah it’s going to be really fun to play live! We’re excited and our fans are excited as we are!

Three Days Grace On Tour!

LNL: For "One-X", you toured for about two years straight. Will it be the same this time around or are you planning on doing it a different way?

Neil: We’re definitely road dogs, workaholics.

Barry: We love to play live every night! I think we all share that passion to be able to get up and share our music with other people and have [them] sing back to us; I don’t think that will ever change for us. But I think we’ll make our touring schedule a little easier, trying to be home a little more often than we have in the past! *everyone laughs* But we’ll still be touring for a long time, we can’t help it!

LNL: Being on the road is not always easy. What would make this part of your job easier?

Neil: More buses

Barry: Yeah for touring with the family and stuff that would ease the pain

Neil: Dirt bikes!

Barry: Yeah, more toys!

Neil: Harleys… how long do you have?

*everyone laughs*

LNL: This way you could have your schedule tighter than last year!

Neil: I think we’ve been a band for a long time so we respect each other. The biggest thing is to be able to give each other space. It’s hard to do on a bus, but you have to figure it out. You can’t always be in each others faces all the time. So yeah, we just need more buses, more trucks, more stuff!

Barry: More toys!

*everyone laughs*

Three Days Grace in the History of Music

LNL: If you had to be remembered for only one of your songs, which one would you like it to be?

Barry and Neil: Woah! Hmmmm…

Neil: I don’t know! You know we consider each album to be a single entity. A record represents a moment in time for us because we write about real things, that we go through and real things that we observe in life. So it’s almost impossible to say one song! I would actually be really bummed out if we were remembered only by one song!

LNL: Of course!

Neil: This record is extremely personal to us. We’ve been through some crazy personal shit, family health issues, confronting death and stuff like that in the last couple of years and that’s part of the reason why we called it “Life Starts Now”. It just reflected the whole thing; redefining what life is. I think sometimes it takes being faced with things like death to really think about what your life is and what it is and how to wake up and conduct yourself and realize that today is the first day to the rest of your life and you have to figure your shit out.

Having Fun With "Life Starts Now"

LNL: For the last couple of questions we thought it would be more fun to get to know you guys a little bit better. It can get a little tiring to answer the same questions over and over at the end of a promo tour, so here are a couple of questions that got inspired by each song title of “Life Starts Now”.

Neil: Alright! Do it!

LNL: “Bitter Taste” - It leaves me a bitter taste when...

Neil: When someone thinks they’re more important than somebody else… and Swiss cheese leaves a bitter taste in my mouth

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Break” - I might break into tears if...

Neil: If I watched the movie Dumb and Dumber I would break into tears laughing my ass off!

Barry: Good one!

Neil: I know!

LNL: “World So Cold” - My world becomes so cold when...

Barry: Winter in Canada!

Neil: When shoveling 6 feet of snow in my backyard!

*Barry laughs*

LNL: “Lost In You” – First thing I do if I get lost into a city I don’t know is...

Barry: hmmm… Call the tour manager!

Neil: Yeah! Call the tour manager.

Barry: “I don’t know where the hell we are, come save our asses” *laughs*

LNL: “The Good Life” - My life is good because...

Neil: ‘cause… for a lot of reasons. First off, we live in a great country and we have food and water and shelter basically.

Barry: I have my feet on the ground still!

LNL: “No More” - If I had no more music in my life I...

Barry: I’d be miserable.

Neil: I don’t know actually! There was music before speech. Actually there’s a book called “Your Brain On Music”, which talks about how music was a huge part of human evolution.

Barry: [By] Daniel Levitin isn’t it?

Neil: Yeah! Do you have my fucking book?

Barry: No no! I think I bought it too!

Neil: Oh, ok…!

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Last To Know” - My fans are the last to know that I...

*thinking for a while*

Neil: That I’m a pretty good wakeboarder!

Barry: …and I’m not!

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Someone Who Cares” - I can’t believe someone who cares about me would...

*thinking…*

LNL: Those questions are making you think!

Barry: Yeah! It’s good! I like it!

Neil: …would steal my fucking computer out of my car!

Barry: That wasn’t someone who cares...

Neil: hmmm right! But that’s my answer anyways! Some asshole stole my computer the other day.

Barry: It’s not easy to find someone who cares about you.

Neil: …but it’s easy enough to find someone who steals your fucking shit!

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Bully” - I might behave like a bully if...

Neil: If I’m bullied.

Barry: Yes!

LNL: What can get you bullied for?

Neil: I used to have the shit beat out of me in school. But I wouldn’t become a bully as a result of it. Bullying is a weakness in personality.

Barry: I think we all have been bullied a bit at some point.

LNL: “Without You” - On the road, I wouldn’t be able to live without...

*thinks*

Neil: Water

Barry: A big bag of weed!

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Goin’ Down” – I would like to be going down in….

Neil: hahaha I didn’t know where that one was going!

*everyone laughs*

Neil: what’s that question again?

LNL: *laughs* I would like to be going down in the history of music as…

Neil: As real in a world contrive shit.

Barry: I’d like to become a classic rock band, that’d be cool!

Neil: Our goal is to have a cover band called like Two Days Grace or something like that

*everyone laughs*

LNL: “Life Starts Now” - I felt like my life started the day I…

*thinks*

Neil: For me, I think it was the first time we played a show in grade 9 in high school. That’s when I knew first of all what I wanted to do in life, second of all, that it would be like people in bands *laughs*! So, I figured that would be my key to my survival in high school: just to keep rocking. The jocks can fuck off!

LNL: That was it for me! Thank you very much for you time.

Barry: Thank you!

Neil: Take care!

Three Days Grace will soon get on the road for their Canadian Tour starting in Victoria, BC on November 16th and ending in Quebec City on December 22nd. http://www.threedaysgrace.com/events Click here for all the tour dates.

Three Days Grace
13 Octobre 2009: Three Days Grace

MU : Et pourquoi?

Adam : Dans mon cas, je crois que ma chanson préférée est Last to Know.

MU : Et toi?

Three Days Grace
Interview with bassist Brad Walst.

Posted: October 27, 2009 at 12:55PM
Author: Aaron Willschick

Without a doubt, one of the most prominent rock bands to come out of Canada since the start of the 2000s is Three Days Grace. The band really requires no introduction after making a huge name for themselves in 2003 with the release of their self-titled debut and then its follow up One-X in 2006. The group is back with its third studio record called Life Starts Now released at the end of September. Yet again, the band has scored a huge radio hit with the album’s first single “Break.” Currently, the guys are gearing up to embark on a very lengthy; twenty date Canadian tour beginning November 16th in Victoria, British Columbia. One day prior to the release of Life Starts Now, we were lucky enough to score an interview with Three Days Grace’s bassist Brad Walst where we discussed this new album, the origins behind it and some plans for 2010.

Your brand new third studio album Life Starts Now comes out tomorrow. How are you feeling about the record now that it’s just about to drop?
Brad: It feels great man; we actually got an actual copy the other day which is always nice to actually hold it in your hand you know. But yeah, I think it’s a great record man, it’s a little bit different musically than the other ones and ah, I don’t know, I just have a good feeling about it, good vibe about it overall.

You guys have toured so much over the last few years. What was the writing and recording process like for Life Starts Now? At what point did you begin the writing process?
Brad: When we were on the road, when we were touring for One-X we actually did a lot of the music, it kind of came up through that on tour, we kind of just set up a little jam room and came up with ideas. But you know as far as lyrics and melody, we usually wait until we get home in Toronto to do that stuff. Most of the music, we usually write a lot of the record on the road and then we probably started writing, I don’t know, December of last year and then went in the studio in April.

For Life Starts Now you again worked with the very well respected Howard Benson. Why did you decide to go with Howard again and could you see yourself working with him again?
Brad: Yeah Howard’s great man. We just had a really good experience with One-X with him and I mean he’s got a great team of people around him too like Mike Plotnikoff the engineer I think is one of the best in the world man. So yeah it was really cool and this time we actually, instead of going to his studio in LA, we went to The Warehouse in Vancouver which was kind of cool and it was the first time he’d actually taken his team anywhere else, we actually flew his whole team and him up to Vancouver and it was kind of a new experience for him and a new experience for us. Howard is just great, we had a vision of how we wanted it to sound, we had our idea or vibe for the record and he was cool man, he just kind of let us do our thing and yeah, it was an awesome experience.

Right there you mentioned the recording of the album, you did it in Vancouver, I also read that you did some of it in LA, is that true?
Brad: No. We just did it all there man.

Ok. Why did you pick Vancouver? How did that come about?
Brad: Well the last two records we did in the States and being from Canada we thought it’d be nice to stay in our home country for this record. And Vancouver has, The Warehouse I think is one of the best studios in North America, it’s got a great live room and it really just fit what we were trying to do. It also has a really great drum room you know for live stuff. We just wanted to make a record that wasn’t so processed and slick sounding so it just made sense man and it was a really cool experience. And Vancouver itself is a different city, it’s got its own vibe, it’s kind of like Seattle, it just rains a lot and I think that kind of atmosphere really added to the record as well.

What would you say is the primary difference in sound or approach between Life Starts Now and the first two albums?
Brad: I think sonically we really kind of paid more attention and tried not to layer as many guitars and stuff like that. Also, just the musicality of everything, I think we all kind of stepped up a bit and made it a bit more musical and I think those two things together make it a pretty heavy sounding album. And uh... yeah man, I think that’s the main difference, other than that we basically did the same kind of process of writing and recording it, I don’t know, we were trying to get more of a live feel, we did a lot more live off the floor stuff instead of just sitting in the studio and punching guitars and layers and shit like that.

What is the writing and recording process like within the band? Is there a primary songwriter or do you all get together and develop songs?
Brad: We’ve always kind of wrote the same man, just kind of sit around and throw ideas out there, Adam does a lot of the melodies and lyrics and stuff like that but you know, we all kind of pitch in everywhere so it’s kind of cool... We usually just start with acoustics most of the time and then evolve it to electric so, yeah we keep doing the same thing and it seems to work.

What is your favourite song off of Life Starts Now?
Brad: I think for me the song “No More” is a favourite just because it’s a little bit of a departure for us, you know it has some really cool beats in it and... I don’t know it’s just kind of a different song for us. I think that one’s my favourite for sure.

The video for the first single “Break” just recently came out and it features a very cool, colourful concept. Who came up with the idea for the video and where did you shoot it?
Brad: We were working with P.R. Brown who’s a really cool director, he does a lot of computer graphics and stuff like that so for this one we kind of wanted to get away from the whole rock video concept and the extras and all that shit so we just kind of sat with him and he brought up this really cool idea of doing just individual performances in these different rooms. We actually shot it all in front of a green screen which we’ve never done so that was a pretty cool experience. With something like that when you’re doing green screen, you really have to put your trust in the director because you’re there wondering what it’s going to look like but he did a great job, I think it’s probably our best video.

A lot of bands hate doing videos. How do you feel about it personally?
Brad: Yeah it’s always a long day man, it’s like a good twenty-four hours straight but it’s cool, I think it’s cool that bands are still doing videos in this day and age because a lot of these music channels don’t even play videos anymore but yeah man, I don’t mind it.

Now you guys of course are from Norwood, not too far from Peterborough. Do you ever get the chance to get back home anymore?
Brad: Well I actually just moved back to Norwood about two years ago so I’m there all the time man. But uh yeah, we all just kind of live in the same area like Neil and Adam live in the Greater Toronto Area, Barry lives up in Alton so we’re all pretty close to Toronto. I just bought a twenty acre apple farm out in Norwood so it’s pretty cool man.

It’s cool that you guys live where you came from because you know; you’ve become such a big band that I’m sure there’s that Hollywood temptation.
Brad: We’re pretty proud of where we came from so I don’t think that’ll ever come out you know, we’ll never move to the States, we’ve seen it, we’ve been down here a lot and we definitely have it good where we are.

With a new album ready to drop, I’m sure you have some very extensive touring plans. Where can we expect to see you guys in the near future?
Brad: We’re actually going to start our first tour in Canada on November 16th in Victoria, we’re basically coming east doing, I think it’s about twenty-two cities so yeah, it should be cool man. I think it’s us, The Used and Default so yeah, that’ll be the first big tour. Right now we’re just doing a little promo run in the States you know we’re playing like six songs in a local bar for contest winners and stuff, but uh, the first big tour will be in November, December in Canada.

What does Three Days Grace have planned for early 2010 and beyond?
Brad: I’m hoping that with this record we can get out of North America a bit more. We’ve been over to Europe a couple of times and you know Australia once but uh, it’d be nice to revisit some of those places we’ve been before you know like Germany and Australia, even Japan. I know for sure we’ll probably do a couple of tours in the States but hopefully by spring, summer; it’d be nice to get back over to Europe and do some shows.

So I guess you guys will be out on the road pretty consistently for the next two years?
Brad: Probably man, the last two records, both cycles were two years to the day so yeah, kind of expecting that and we’ll see what happens.
[ END ]

Three Days Grace show postponed due to 'family emergency'

Update: Please note that the Three Days Grace show scheduled for Tuesday night has been postponed.

The band cited a family emergency for the late cancellation.

The show will be rescheduled for some time in 2010.

Tickets for the Nov. 17 concert will be honoured at the door on the new date. For information, go to livenation.com.

Original story in Monday's Province:

The band still is not happy-perky-happy but it is singing a more optimistic tune.

Three Days Grace has titled its third album Life Starts Now and even has an unabashed love song on it, "Lost In You." The Norwood, Ont., quartet is still heavy and listening to the record is still work, but its outlook is more encouraging.

This is the same Three Days Grace whose first hit was "I Hate Everything About You" and whose first two albums portrayed it as a miserable, angry bunch. According to singer Adam Gontier, Three Days Grace may be dark but it's letting in more light.

"It's natural," he claims. "Every artist seems to grow and evolve."

For Gontier, Life Starts Now might have a personal significance.

About three years ago, he was addicted to painkillers and, as part of his subsequent rehabilitation, he was performing acoustic sets and speaking on the evils of addiction at rehab centres during stops on the band's tour.

"Doing the rehab centres was a big part of my life," Gontier says. "I've moved on since then. It's kind of opened our eyes."

The band still draws inspiration from the early 1990s bands that came out of Seattle.

"It's always been that to me," Gontier notes. "From the days I was

listening to Nirvana and Alice In Chains. There was a lot of pain there."

Pain that Three Days Grace managed to spin into gold. One of the most played bands on the radio, Three Days Grace has sold records during a time when many hard-rock bands are having difficulty. As well, many bands don't last long enough to develop the way Three Days Grace has.

"I feel we're writing better songs," the singer claims. The other three in the group are Neil Sanderson, Brad Walst and Barry Stock.

"On our first record, we just wanted a sound that people would recognize, but we did that and it was time to move on.

"You know what?" Gontier continues and illustrates the change that has come over the band. "That song ["Lost In You"] was actually easy to write.

"It's something different than we've ever done before but, because it's such a departure for us, we had to decide if we should put it on the LP. In the end, a good song is a good song.

"Life Starts Now is about playing the hand you're dealt. It's a whole different oulook on life.

"It's a fresh start on our approach to life," Gontier says. "But not a fresh start for the band."

Inspiring future musicians a thrill for Three Days Grace

Rockers coming to Hat with Default and The Used for Nov. 28 show TENILLE TELLMAN
ttellman@medicinehatnews.com
Canadian rockers Three Days Grace will take to the Medicine Hat stage this month as part of a 22-date cross-country tour.
Singer Adam Gontier, guitarist Barry Stock, bassist Brad Walst and drummer/pianist Neil Sanderson are headlining the Nov. 28 show at The Arena. Guests The Used and Default will kick off the night.
The Juno-nominated band has been rehearsing in preparation for the upcoming tour start in Victoria before making their way back to Quebec.
“It’s going to be a good long tour, it’s probably the biggest Canadian tour we’ve done,” Walst told the News.
Many new songs, backdrops and sets are planned for the shows, he added.
“We’ve got a few things up our sleeve for sure, but it’s going to be a high-energy show and hopefully people are into it.”
Three Days Grace is known for hits like “I Hate Everything About You,” “Animal I Have Become” and “Never Too Late.”
The group just released their third album “Life Starts Now” in September 2009.
“It’s always kind of a nervous time when you release an album, but our fans have stuck around waiting and it’s been received really well.”
With only a small U.S. tour for radio and club promotions, the Canadian trek is the first in promoting the new record.
The band started during the grunge era and have evolved over the years, says Walst. The new album has a more classic sound where listeners may feel as through they are in the room, hearing the performance live.
With almost 16 years under their belt, Three Days Grace has no intentions of slowing down. Reflecting on current events like the break up of Aerosmith, he says many can be inspired by the years of success the group experienced.
“It’s pretty inspiring for me, when you meet people — especially younger kids who are starting a band — and they say ‘you inspired me to start playing bass’ and things like that. Hopefully those bands, when they make it, they’ll mention us as a main interest. That’d be pretty cool.”
Slugging it out in Canada and working to make their name known in the States, the band has overcome many challenges which only contributed to their team strength.
“You really know if you’re going to stick together if you can tour Canada because some of those drives are pretty long,” he laughed.
Tickets are available at the Esplanade Box office, online at www.tixx.ca or by phone at 403-502-8777.
